I just recieved a recall for a 2001 dually. It is for "Power distribution center generator cable" Anyone gone in for this??

TSB 08-23-00

Just got my notice yesterday.

snip-snip

08-23-00, All, Plastic boot to protect the electrical harness B+ end terminal at the generator.

While service is being performed to the engine, it may be possible for a momentary electrical short to occur. The electrical short may be caused when a metallic object, such as a wrench or oil filter, comes in contact with the B+ end terminal of the generator wire harness. The B+ end terminal is bolted to the generator B+ stud (output terminal). The B+ stud on the generator is protected by a plastic surround. Part of the wire harness end terminal may extend beyond the protective plastic surround for the B+ output terminal.

This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 5. 9L ? 24V diesel engine built before engine serial number 56681800 with a date of manufacture of January 29, 2000. The repair procedure involves the installation of a protective rubber boot (part number 04487042) over the B+ terminal.

Got my recall yesturday.

I need to find out if I can get the part(s) to do this myself. The last time I took my truck in for a recall (oil pan gasket), the dealer gave it to me dry... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . they toasted my VB

Little Bill.....

I don't think this is the same as the TSB. The TSB is just a rubber boot for the generator terminal. This sounds like it's in the distrbution box.

Received my recall notice yesterday. Suppose I should remove the BHAF and EZ Module before going to Dealer.

It's not the same as the TSB, here's the text -

"The Power Distribution Center generator cable connection on your truck may loosen. A loose generator cable connection could cause an underhood fire. "

My guess is a loose nut or a bad crimp in the PDC cable going to the generator (thought they called them alternators... )

They may fix the loose nut in the PDC, but they will never fix the loose nut behind the wheel in my truck :D

I just got my notice yesterday also. Funny thing is that the problem was realized nearly a year ago (bean counters vs. lawyers). I believe that they install the connector with the fastener inverted now, so that if it does loosen it won't short out. I briefly looked at mine last year but couldn't find what they were talking about. Hopefully, someone will tune in with the details so we can avoid the dealer.

I've got an '01. 5 ETH with a 9-00 build date, and have not seen anything from DC regarding this TSB. Has anyone with the same or a later build date than me been notified?

RedRam,

I got my recall notice tonight too. I think

my actual build date is August 2000, delivered

in September. I hope someone comes up with the

details on this... . don't plan on letting the

dealer touch it. :)

OK, Here is the text... .

(SafetyAlerts) - DaimlerChrysler Corporation Has Recalled

the 2001 Dodge Ram because the alternator wire

connection to the power distribution center (PDC) can loosen, resulting a vehicle fire.

Potential Number of Units Affected: 268,740

Manufacture: January – August 2000

Defect: On certain pickup trucks, the alternator wire connection to the power distribution center (PDC) can loosen, resulting a vehicle fire.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the installation of the alternator wire connection to the PDC and, if necessary, reposition the wire so that the crimp connection will face upward and tighten the fastener to the correct torque setting. The manufacturer reported that owner notification

was expected to begin during late April or early May.

Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a

reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at

1-800-853-1403.

You would think with our "close ties" to DC, as

stated in the TSB forum, we would have this data

here first and not at some outside site. :(

Got the same recall notice yesterday. Wow. With a half dozen failed lift pumps behind me, as well as every steering component being worn/leaky/defective at only 45,000 miles, I'm really  worried about this loose wire! Yikes!

If my injection pump seizes up, thanks to the lift pump going out, the vague steering could cause me to go into the ditch, with the impact knocking the wire loose, and setting the spilled fuel from the bad pumps on fire ! I better go get that wire fixed right away, so I don't have to worry about the other two defects.

Thanks for the info, Mick. Looks like with my September '00 build date, I barely dodged the bullet on this one. Sounds like it doesn't amount to a hill of beans anyway.

Took mine in. I actually kind of like the folks here at the dealer. Bought the truck on vacation in Amarillo. They said the part was two dollars and change. I think they can handle that. One of the guys down there is my mechanic. I think if he can put in a clutch he can handle a battery wire. I left the ez and bhaf on. He moved the ez out of the way and checked it out. Parts should be here today or Friday. Not a problem for me at this dealer. Guess I got lucky.

Had mine to the dealer yesterday on a different issue (Bad track bar @ 13,500miles). They said the part needed to fix this recall was on back order and would not be available for 2 weeks.

so your sayin that between january and august 2000 someone changed a standard installation procedure and then they magicaly went back to doing it the old way on the 31st day in august? How can this happen. Did someone with a 50lb brain come up with a new way to install the terminal and then found out it didnt work. Or was DM trying to save some money till they found out it could cause a fire? I just dont see how something like that could happen.

Got my notice in the mail yesterday also. I am going to inspect this myself, and if it really is a problem, I'll have to take it in I guess...

Tom

BriarHopper,

You have me laughing out loud ... . at work!

I'd really like to know what actual part they have to order. Maybe a bellville washer stack to ensure there is constant tension on this connection? Please let us all know when one of

you get the warranty paperwork.

I'm guessing the torque spec is in the service

manual and I will look tonight.

Thanks,

Mick

OK Guys, here Ya go... .

Power distribution center alternator and

battery connections should be tightened to

75 in. lbs, 6. 25 ft. lbs. or 8. 4 NM (newton

meters). I looks like they are referencing

the rearmost connection which is the output

from the alternator... . but I'd check 'em both!

Happy Torquing.
