that sounds all good in well but still the article says that either the operator or seller has to pay the 24. 4 cents tax per gallon, don't know of to many stations that are going to pay sales tax on fuel that they are not using, unless they get that money back from the gov't somehow... Of course its early in the morning im still somewhat sick and may have misread the article, correct me if im wrong.

If so im going to the local staion and filling up every can i have empty, down to my 2liter coke bottle. :-laf

The article says IRS will allow a highway vehicle operator to use red fuel IF the federal fuel tax is paid by the operator on that fuel; IRS will waive the monthly payments; apparently the tax may be paid at greater intervals or with the taxpayer's annual tax return, but it still MUST be paid.

The article says NOTHING about what state taxing agencies will do, and about half the taxes on a gallon of fuel are state taxes. It's not an IRS agent that dips truck fuel tanks, it's a local state trooper or highway patrol ofcr.

Since were on the subject of red fuel has anyone ever heard of a "light duty" truck getting dipped? just curious because I never have heard of that happening.

Dave

I haven't heard of it in my area, but I have read many stories of people getting checked and fined around the country.

$$

My very close friend got his truck dipped. 96 1 ton dually, bed on, no buisiness signs regular looking truck. 2500 $$$ fine

Minnesota

Last fall in MN a friend of mine that has a VW Jetta diesel, got stopped in a sting and had his tank checked. They (DOT) were stopping everybody that had a diesel and checked everybody's tanks. Thats MN for ya, they seem to be pretty hard with their laws

My concern is that once red dye is in your truck for this short run that it will be there for ever. It never really goes away. So after Sept 15 when it all ends and you get pulled over and diped, but your running regular diesel are you going to get fined. and whats to keep a person from running red dye after that and just claiming that its residue dying there fuel.

ROCKJEEP,

If you buy dyed fuel during this time period, the IRS announcement says you should keep your receipt showing that you paid the required tax on the dyed fuel. That should cover you later on when and if you get checked. I had the same concern myself.

So if I go today and pay the taxed price and keep the recipt in the truck what is stoping me from running red dye all the time.

IRS, CHP, and any other gov agency that will want to ruin your day. Like I said, not worth it, even more so in Calif. :)

I don't see any point to running the red stuff, even with this change in policy. You still have to pay the taxes. They are only saying you won't get a fine for running red. The only benefit I can see would be if there was not any #2 road fuel around, then you could use the red stuff to keep going.

Thats why you should Debadge your truck, they are so quiet and probably most of the bears wouldn't notice the 1" bigger tailpipe. . :-laf Might even think about putting a sticker "Yeah... its got a hemi" on the backglass :-laf

Went by are local station that carries red diesel and asked them about this. They said that they were sell tons of the stuff. I asked about later and they said that they would continue to sell it. The IRS has opened a box of worms with this one and created a loop hole to avoid a fine. By keeping the recipts for the red dye you paid ttaxes on they have a harder time proving that you are still running red dye.

Well I talked to my local dealer this weekend about this and asked about warrenty issues. Was told that if I was able to prove that I did pay all the taxes and carrie a copy of the irs forms and recipts that they would honor my warrenty.

It sounds like more trouble than its worth. The savings are not that great when you compair getting hasseled by the government. I, myself don't awant to be on a IRS list, which this issue will surely do. Never beleive that there is no catch. there is always a catch. Diesel here at Chevron is down to $3. 09 a gallon with regular unleaded at $2. 95. Yes, its a rape but Im not going to set myself up to a regular visit from the feds! If you think Im wrong, wait. You will see. i know a few guys that got their tanks dipped a few years ago. ever since then, every so ofter he gets a visit from the local guy and gets dipped again. No reason at all. Im not going to put myself in that position!
