When I ordered mine using the number from the TDR site It came in as a dark grey valve cover according to the parts man at Cummins. I called several times to verify that the number I gave him was what had come in. Turns out that they did not even know what they were taking about. One guy said to me that it was painted a dark grey and it looks like it use to be red? Then they tried to sell me some red paint??!!! Anyway after this conversation I made a trip down there and low and behold it was the protective coating they were looking at and the cver was RED.

Also regarding the torgue, I did'nt torgue mine to a certain spec. but it has to be more that a mere 18 ( inch lbs. )?????????? If it is installed at only 18 in. lbs. I can asure it will leak... . and soon.

Incorrect Torque Specs

I have the single volume manual, and while on page 9-251 it does say 18 inch pounds, if you convert the 24 Nm to ft lbs, it should be 18 FOOT pounds. Also, on page 9-195, it says torque to 18 foot pounds.

Being that know one else put up a pic. , here's what they look like installed... .

Sorry for the dust, I'll go do some penalty push ups :D

I was going to post the pic of mine, when it gets here, i am stalking the UPS guy. At least now i can see what it will look like

Rob Hanson is correct... the OE valve cover used on the '00+ 24v engines is NOT the same as the Cummins valve covers. Having had ALL THREE versions (OE '98. 5/'99, OE '00+ and the Cummins "red") valve covers, I can and have commented on them in the past. The Cummins valve cover is the heaviest at 7. 75 lbs. , the OE '98. 5/'99 version weighs 7. 6 lbs. and the OE '00+ version is a scant 4. 2 lbs.:eek: After closely inspecting each of the three different valve covers it's very apparent (to me) the later version was simply cheapened up. PERIOD. It also lists for approximately double the Cummins "red" (or Cummins "black") valve cover at your Dodge dealer. In addition, the Cummins valve covers do not have the beveled area on the top, passenger side of the valve cover (running the length of the valve cover) as do the OE valve covers. Another observation... the lettering on the OE valve covers faces the passenger side, the Cummins counterparts, to the driver side.

Questions? Does anybody really care?

:D

PS: I like my Cummins "red" valve cover the best... especially after I removed the ribs and lettering from the top and had it chrome plated (including the '98. 5/'99 style holddown bolts). :D

da*n I love that billet l:eek::eek:k!

looks great

Hey Big,

Insted of push up how bout you send a set of 275 injectors. :D

The red looks really cool. I might just have to head over to the shop, and pick one up. Thanks for the pic, it did NOT help my resistence to spending $ only a week after I got the truck home.

John you have me going now. Flame Red truck with a Flame Red valve cover. Flame red intake, turbo, air cleaner, engine, red tires!   Red!Red! Red!:D :D

IT CAME!! i got home from work and there was the box with the HUGE "Cummins genuine parts" sticker on it. My truck was shutdown for not even 5 minutes and i took the bolts out (burned my finger tips in the process) yanked off the stock valve cover (wearing pot holders!) and on went the Red one, it is awesome, makes the engine compartment look great. I would post a pic, but it looks just like Big Saints, so there is nothing more to see. They were not kidding about that protective coating. The valve cover is dark grey when you take it out of the box, scares the hell out of you. But you peel it off like a sticker and then you see how nice and pristine it is. Took me 15 minutes, torqued the bolts to 18ft lbs and thats it.

Glad you got it.

LOL at the protective cover, I got mine through Brandon, he was kidding me about sending out one in 'HOT PINK', had me worried until I peeled it back and saw that it was indeed, THE BIG RED ONE :D . Enjoy it, seems to wake up the entire engine compartment IMHO.

EMD----- AHHHHH, Isn't it a wonderful feeling when you install a new toy. It's ashame that DC didn't put those on to begin with. It really wakes up the under hood apperance.

EMDDIESEL, I hope you just made a typo on the torque spec. !!!! The correct torque is 18 INCH lbs.

I believe I could finger tighten a bolt to 18 in. lbs. This is and can not be the correct torque for a valve cover on this engine!

EMD, I started on the inside bolts and worked my way outward towards each end, but did not torque. I cannot remember what size bolt it is but due to the fact that the RED covers are thicker the torque would probably be diffferent. I just looked at my OEM cover and was trying to figure out if the boss that the bolt goes through bottoms against the head. If not then this alone would change the torque figures so as not to overtighten and distort or crack the cover.
