I'm shopping for a new truck but am living the ol' 12v versus 24v debate! I have a 12v now and there's a few things I don't like about them and I'm thinking of going back to the 24-valve camp.

My main dislike for the 24v is the stacatto chatter especially from the HO. I can live with faulty lift pumps and troublesome VP44s (although in 100,000 miles I had zero problems). The noise is one of the primary reasons I sold my '01 HO. On long road trips the din got wearisome. On most 12-valves you can hardly hear anything on the highway, and that's the way I like it. If I could make the 24v quieter somehow, going back to a 24v is an easy decision.

Is there some way of shushing the motor a little without having to install 500 lbs of Dynamat or engine blanket? I'm not talking 3rd gen quiet but 12-valve quiet. Do any of the boxes or injectors help? I have not been keeping up on 24-valve tech too much lately. I have noticed at dyno and other events some 24v trucks are almost as quiet as a 12v, but have never figured out what the differences are.

Awww - come on Vaughn. You gotta look at it like a Harley - go slow and make alot of noise. Only in this case, you don't really have to go slow.

Maybe Marco can write you up a quiet Smarty program. :D Otherwise haven't seen anything other than Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank to make it quieter.

A nice set of earplugs @ TheEarPlugStore.com does wonders. Cuts out the engine noise (and the turbo whine), and you can still talk at a comfortable level, $5, cheap!

(I also have a different set for wife's SNORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, cuts that out too zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :D ) They have a noise canceling device for just about ANYTHING / ANYONE.

Vaughn, Don's 4s took the edge of the clatter of my '02 HO.

I agree that the HO 24Vs seem to be the loudest CTDs of all. Much louder even than a 12V. Funny that they advertised the 24V as being quieter, eh? Weird.

Anyhow, try some Mach 4s or have Lenny whip up some 24V sticks for you and it should be enough to take the edge off the clatter.

My 02 has no soundproofing at all, and I don't find the sound objectionable on long trips.

Then again, I always run empty. Towing might be a different story.

give lsfarm a pm. his 24v is just a quiet as a 3rd gen. i dont know what he has done to it but its quiet.

Greg, did a ton to his truck to keep it quiet. Do a search on "noise nazi" and you'll find a lot of info on the sound deadening. I have attempted much of what is in that post and mine is much quieter, but still loud. My buddy has a 99 SO truck and his is much quiter. He did the dynamat thing, but his got quieter with Mach 4. 5 injectors and we adjusted his valves last weekend and it got quiter still. I adjusted mine on the HO the weekend before and it didn't quieten it at all. I went to . 08 and . 18 on my tolerances and he went to . 07 and . 17 (spec calls for . 10 and . 20 give or take . 05 for intake and exhaust respectively). His is a different animal than mine in many instances though. He doesn't have a fueling box either, not sure if that would make much differnce from the inj pump noise or not. I'm still contemplating going up to 35" tires to reduce my gear ratio down some with my 410 gears. Mine tachs high and I already have 32" tires. That is just some of things I've considered and tried with the noise reduction. BTW, I also did the ATP valve cover and oil pan blankets. They do make a difference, but it could still be quieter.

Good luck, Matt

Silence

I'll have to say that mine drives me nuts too... .

No matter where I go people turn around and stare until I turn it off... . I'm not sure if they are admiring it or if they are annoyed. Probably a little bit of both. You definitely cannot be sneaky. Whenever I come home late at night I always see a couple lights come on in the houses around me. :-laf

I did a couple things to include some Dynamat. They seemed to make a difference. Mine is amazingly quiet on the highway between 70 and 75 (with the factory airbox). I can hold a conversation without yelling. But... . I still wear earplugs on trips longer than 400 miles (BHAF and turbo whine).

I remember reading somewhere on here that the oil pan blanket made the most difference for under the hood mods. Makes since...

This is actually funny because I am (was) considering going to a 12 valve. But I guess I'm going to stick it out a little longer.

The noise is fun sometimes. But for the most part it is just annoying.

I passed on purchasing an 06 and sought out an 01. 5 HO for the noise. Drove it 1600 miles home grinning all the way!!!! :-laf

4" Strait pipe it. The music from the tail will make you forget about the clatter up front. :D

Tried it!

I would MUCH rather listen to the clatter :)

After trying the straight pipe thing, I installed two mufflers

Vaughn you can shush the motor with Mild to Moderate hearing lose like I have. My wife calls it selective hearing, but I truly don't hear her every word :-laf :-laf :-laf even when she is in the truck with me. Year's of construction work in Industrial processing plants and I can not even hear the turbo wine with the windows down:-laf :-laf :-laf (Works for me)

Good Day All I have to say I love the sound and at times I hate it.

Ok I drive 24 hours a day I average between 1000 to 1500 Km a day and in the mournings and in the day I LOVE IT But when I have to sleep in it and you have the RPM at 1000 or 1500 ( 1500 due to -30 C out side. welcome to Canada!) It is loud To loud. So is there a thing for the two woulds?? :)

Definetly selective hearing thing, mines noisy as well-even more noisier with the brake running,ATP hood liner helped a bit(spendy though) ,sinthetic oil a little more, every little bit helps i guess. I can still hear it warming up from inside the house, maybe my Mach 4's will help even more when they arrive this week, try and see. I still get alot of turn around from people on the steets, but doesn't really bother me. Anyone who doesn't like to ride in my rig because of noise can either choose to get in,sit down and shut-up or they can WALK. Either way i prefer to drive alone ,especially on long trips, wife likes to fly,i'll drive, take in the scenery. Years ago when we had to go back home to eastern Canada, mom and sister would choose to fly,me and pops would always drive staight through,30-40 hours at one time, sure do miss those days.

When I put my JR stage 4 injectors in, it took the rattle out and made it sound more like a 12v. I let my buddy borrow the injectors when I had them out for a while and it made it sound more like a 12v as well. The louder and more turbo whine you have, the better! :D

Eric

I think it's personel opinion. The only time I really hear the engine is idle. AFter that I hear the exhuast a bit, little bit of turbo and it's nice and quiet. I drove my buddies 01 and man that thing was way loud compared to mine. Like there was no firewall loud. Not sure why.

Compared to my Jeep on Swampers, the truck rides nice and smooth and quiet. :D

I wonder if Marco could come up with something or maybe one of his existing programs helps with noise and no one has reported it? I'm guessing the VP-44 couldn't support a second injection sequence?
