I'm shopping for a new truck but am living the ol' 12v versus 24v debate! I have a 12v now and there's a few things I don't like about them and I'm thinking of going back to the 24-valve camp.
My main dislike for the 24v is the stacatto chatter especially from the HO. I can live with faulty lift pumps and troublesome VP44s (although in 100,000 miles I had zero problems). The noise is one of the primary reasons I sold my '01 HO. On long road trips the din got wearisome. On most 12-valves you can hardly hear anything on the highway, and that's the way I like it. If I could make the 24v quieter somehow, going back to a 24v is an easy decision.
Is there some way of shushing the motor a little without having to install 500 lbs of Dynamat or engine blanket? I'm not talking 3rd gen quiet but 12-valve quiet. Do any of the boxes or injectors help? I have not been keeping up on 24-valve tech too much lately. I have noticed at dyno and other events some 24v trucks are almost as quiet as a 12v, but have never figured out what the differences are.
