Since new my truck has regenerated every 650 miles or so. In the last few months it has regenerated more often. Now it is regenerating every 350 or so miles. Any idea why? Should I be concerned? Thanks.

The first question you will be asked is "How do you drive the truck?" Highway, Towing, Short Trips? How are you monitoring the regen status? When it's in regen, are you giving it time to complete? Cruzing at highway speeds for a period of time may clean things out.

I am just throwing ideas out there. It kinda strikes a nerve when others have told me to "Search the topic" but search through the forum may yield a plethora of insight. It gets a little tricky with topics that share generations but the Regen topic is fairly focused and widely discussed. I searched a similar concern as we all want to catch anything that may be amiss but if the CEL is clear you are probably fine. Did the 350 mile thing begin as it got cold?

Cheers,
CMB

I drive the truck mixed city and highway. Some towing but infrequent and not heavy. Short trips are rare. Usually 20 plus miles per start. I am monitoring regens with my nose and instantaneous mpg. I cant say I have never interrupted a regen but its rare if i do. And yes this all started as winter temps dropped. But this is Arizona and not that cold. Today high will be 77F and low 48.

There may have been a time or two that I smelled something, but not sure, so in nearly four years of ownership I really don't have any idea when a regen is occurring . But 34K on it , I assume all is well.

IMO I wouldn't worry too much about it, no CEL's or warnings, I'd motor on.

First question is how do you know it's in regen?

I would say that's not a 100% certain way to know you're in regen.

How many miles are on the truck? The DPF sensor lines could need cleaned.

Your correct, its not very high tec. The odor is unique at a stop light with outside air coming in. Also the tailpipe is much hotter and mpg drops. At best I would miss a regen using this method. The truck has 31k on it. If the sensor lines are obstructed would the warranty cover it?

At 31K it's doubtful they are plugged and it's more likely you just notice the regens more often right now.

350 miles seems like an average interval between regens, where 650 seems too far for anything less than highway towing.

That could be. In the summer with recirc ac I know I have missed alot of them. Also I tow and run highways more in the summer.

I'm noticing it on mine too and have a ScanGauge II so I can see when I'm in regen. Much of it has to do, at least for diesels I've owned, with the colder winter temperatures. In the heat of the summer, regens are much less but in the winter the number of regens increases. Colder engine, overall cooler running in the winter, short trips, etc., can all add up to increased regens due to faster soot load buildup. I've also been told utilizing an additive can also increase the regens "due to the extra crap being burned by the engine" but have yet to find anything in writing from from a diesel mechanic/engineer who can verify the validity of the claim.

FYI, I had a regen a week ago and another one last night in less than 800 miles of driving. The cooler temps in the Houston area have a lot to do with it plus being off work this past week the shorter trips aren't helping matters either.

AH64ID, how hard is it to clean the lines? My dealer thinks I have some moisture in one of them and the cold temps is causing ice giving me a warning that the exhaust system needs service. Then 3 times today in 40 miles she showed 100% plugged and did a regin.

Man, I have had our 2015 for over 2 year and 37K and have never known when it was regenning!!! Got to get my nose checked. SnoKing

Yea, I don't think you can really tell when it's in regen without a gauge. I can't. My nose is bad too I guess.

That's pretty good, I have them as much as 75 miles in city only driving.

If you are smelling the REGEN odour inside your cab, it isn't healthy at all. This is a big issue that hasn't been fully resolved, improvements at best.

On my 2500, passive REGEN is always working when temperatures are around 600 degrees. If built up still continues, then you will get an active REGEN. It can very from 90KM to several hundred or more KM, depends on season, fuel quality and driving habits.
