I picked up my 2006 3500 last month from Dave Smith in Idaho. I was worried that I'd run into problems registering her here. My fears were unfounded! As long as you make sure that you order and receive the CA EMISSIONS option, and make sure that the CPL tag on the motor says "certified For for sale in CA" Thats all that CA DMV cares about- well, not ALL, they want their extortion money too!
Heres all you have to do:
1. Get truck weighed at CERTIFIED truck scale (mine weighed 6740 with spare tire removed, nearly empty fuel tank, no jack). I thought about removing batteries but changed my mind as the new cheapo hood struts on the 3rd gens make it difficult to pull battery. Cost me $8. 50.
2. Take the following to DMV: Checkbook, MSO (Manufacturers Statement of Origin, provided by dealer) Application for Title (DSM had he Ca form filled out for me all ready to go)
3. DMV will send out an inspector to verify the truck is CA certified, he will then hand you a sign off form.
4. Take all the above back inside, pay the outrageous "use tax" and weight fee (the lighter your truck the less you pay- remember you have to pay the weight fee every year so the lighter you can get her the better for your pocketbook). My total bill including sales tax was $3,856. 00 (3200 was just for "use tax")
5. DMV will then give you plates and tags- took me less than 1 hour (I got there 30minute before they opened so I'd be at front of line).
It just makes me sick to my stomach that CA charges me sales tax on money that I DIDNT EVEN SPEND (the $4,000 in rebates was included in the sales tax calculation)
