I'll share my experience with DFC Diesel. I purchased my long block and had it professionally installed. After just 15K miles, it developed a knock in the lower part of the engine. Unfortunately, I was on a trip towing my 5th wheel and 300 miles from home. I needed a new engine now. The only offer short of “send us the engine and we’ll get back to you” which would surely take months, was that I could buy a new engine from DFC, send them the old, and then they'd determine if it’s a warranty failure or not. Considering the numerous negative Google reviews from others in a similar situation as I, I was not confident they would find in my favor, and I’d effectively be stuck with two undependable engines and be out nearly $20K after buying two engines and paying labor charges. Thus, I decided to buy an engine from Jasper who is in the USA where I will have some legal recourse if I have further issues. I’m not even willing to risk losing another $2500 by paying Jasper's core charge and sending DFC the bad engine because at most, they'd simply send me a replacement for which I’d have no use. So, congratulations DFC Diesel. You win!

I really hope you get a good engine out of Jasper, I've not heard much good about Jasper rebuilds on HEMI engines...

Thank you. Mine is the 5.9 Cummins so hopefully it will be good. Both the local mechanic where I broke down and my mechanic at home said they've had good luck with them. I can't afford another failed engine. Heck, I can't really afford this one...

Unfortunately, no. I choose Jasper based upon the recommendation of both the local shop in Winnemucca, NV where I broke down and my regular mechanic back home in Sacramento, I've been in Winnemucca for the past month waiting for the Jasper and just got the truck back yesterday afternoon. My wife and I are going to spend the next few days making some day trips to put some miles on it before towing our 5th-wheel home. This has been a trip from hell with issue after issue, including a transmission cooling line clamp causing is to first break j down about 50 miles from home and paying $1500 for a tow home on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. Got that resolved on Monday and tried leaving again on Tuesday only trip blown the engine near Winnemucca. At this point we just want to get home.

If I was you I would be spend a few extra $$ and get RV towing insurance make sure that it includes trailer towing, I'm sure the $1500 you spend would have paid for several years of tow insurance...

Two years ago I couldn't. They weren't making them any more for a 2000 model year. I didn't look into that this time.

I think I have towing insurance. I submitted a claim for that tow and we'll see...

I think they are back in the line-up, just lately I've seen an advertisement from Mopar for the reman engines.

2 years ago at the height of the pandemic was probably a bad time to ask for it with all the shortages we experienced.

AFAIK, the 24V 98.5-2002 has never been a Cummins or Mopar reman option.

Yes, it is kind of strange, but maybe someday? Would probably be the way to go although certainly not the least expensive up front but should essentially be like getting a completely new engine.

Although some experiences to the contrary even in this thread, I still lean toward DFC, and then to a good small shop, there are a few around, but they don't advertise nationally and Cummins isn't their specialty or even diesel engines.

For shops that you may not heard of, I follow a couple who have social media presence and they appear good at engines, but they aren't Cummins pickup specific:

I have watched enough videos from both shops to identify that they seem to do good work, especially the Colorado shop, a father and son and they seem to be the real deal.

I live in Oregon and have both on a short list if I ever deicide to have mine rebuilt vs purchasing a long block from a big builder online. In fact, I am vacationing in SLC area this week and I may just swing by Dave's and check the shop out.
