Turns out the remote-start feature is a $400-plus option on the Ram diesels.

I'd appreciate hearing some opinions/experience on the desirability of this feature.

Thanks!

(aftermarket) great if you want the AC on before you get in it. Not so great for heat in cold weather. Can also be used as a cooldown and the keep the engine running if you need to leave the truck locked for a few minutes and take the keys with you. Do not accept a RS that uses CPS sense, use tach sense, CPS sense hookups will cause unreliable starting due to AC or other settings being set "on" at start.

Had it on two other trucks (after market) and loved it. Will get it on our next Ram now that it's available.

It won't heat up the truck quickly in cold weather, but It will warm you up faster once you start driving.

The remote starter is part of the Laramie H package.

Fred,

This was thought to be the case due to mis-information from Dodge,... but RS is only factory available on the Hemi.

See this report from Adam Macomber -- page 10, post #147 in Pete's "Just finalized... " thread:

I have the Laramie H on order, Adam says maybe railcar-loading today. Others who have already received this pklg. may comment on whether anyone received RS with the "H" on a diesel.

Thanks B,

Got the cabin-heater for the cold weather.

Can you explain what "CPS" is?

Jim,

I've ordered the "fuel operated cabin heater" to do the interior comfort heat-up without having to idle the engine for extended periods.

Not inexpensive, but I did a search some time back, and users recommended it highly.

If you get a Remote Start, get an aftermarket unit. The Mopar one is annoying on a number of levels. The most annoying thing is that for diesels they enforce a 45 second wait to start, with absolutely no chance of programmability. I live in Southern California, and don't even know what my wait-to-start light looks like because it never comes on. All the aftermarket ones I've heard of either have a programmable delay or can be tied to your wait-to-start light so that they can start the engine as soon as it is ready.

The other annoying feature of the Mopar unit is that it won't work if the engine has thrown a code. These engines do throw codes every now and then, particularly if you do much in the way of modding.

The other thing is that it doesn't come with a manual. I've called Dodge, and I've had my local dealership open up a brand new box and look for a manual to photocopy for me, and it just doesn't have one. It seems to take some sort of double click combination to make it work, which is alright I suppose, but I would really like to see a manual, and it doesn't exist.

I'm so frustrated with my Mopar R/S that I am seriously considering tearing it out, throwing it away and starting over. I think I've managed to start my vehicle remotely twice in the 10 months I've had it.

I installed the Mopar remote start myself, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's range is remarkable given it's size. The fob is much smaller than any fobs I've had in the past. Pretty straight forward install. A couple of tee-splices, and one tie-in to a wire coming from the computer. Took a couple of hours one evening after work. If you live in a warm climate you can bypass the 30-sec preheat feature if you want. If you are standing at the door or trying to impress others in the parking lot, 30 seconds my seem like a long time. But if you want to warm the vehicle from the house in the morning you'll run it for a lot more than 30 seconds anyway. I also ordered the optional add-on two-way remote. system The idea behind that device is that you can do a start from much grater distance (up to 1800 feet). And It provides positive feedback on the remote fob that the engine has indeed started. So you can start from your office or whatever, and know that it really worked. I've not had the time to do that part of the install yet, so I can't report on how well it works. But the concept is great. It does replace the fob with a larger one having a larger antenna, so it ends up being similar to most other remote fobs size-wise. My kit came with installations instructins and they include how to set up the optional features like 30-sec dealy, etc. So if you have the ability save a bunch of money and do the install yourself and you;ll get the installation manual.

How do you defeat the delay? If you have access to a fax machine is there any chance you could fax me a copy of the instructions to 661-268-1416?

I'm on the other side of the country from home this week. But I can do it when I get back in town. You will have to have access to the tiny little LED that is part of the wire bundle, to count the blinks. If you know what I'm talking about up to this point you shouldn't have any trouble. If not you'll have some more reading and maybe some dissassembly to get to the LED. Standby for the fax on Friday??

Dodge is doing the Texas 3 step with the rs. I looked this morning on the dodges web site and it is still listing the remoteas part of the H package. When my truck came in with out it I made sure the dealer waqs going to install it and that DCX was footing the bill. Bait and switch is still illegal in IN. (lol)

The Mopar remote start has been pulled off the Market for now... ... too many issues on the 06-07 5. 9's I have heard issues are also showing up on aftermarket kits(D/C does not make it's kit)

What kind of issues? I had a Code Alarm unit on my '05 that worked pretty well. The cool part was I had the Telematics upgrade - I could start the truck from the other side of the planet. You actually call an 800 number and the truck gets a signal supposedly similar to a cell signal that instructs the RS. I sit nowhere near my truck at work, and it is very nice to walk up to a nice cool truck at lunch when it is over 100 degrees. I also thought the dodge units were made by Code Alarm, and always wondered if they could be Telematics capable. Has anyone seen something like a phone jack on the Mopar RS brain?

I did not see an option when I ordered my new 07 6. 7 larami H package truck

as far as I know it does not have it. the msrp was 58,300 so I would think it would have it anyone know how to tell?

you can only get remote start on hemi motors also dealer told me chrysler has pulled all rs off the shelf if they had any in stock they had to send them back can not sell them

I have the factory RS on my Jeep and it is great. At least with a gas engine it is cold in the summer and hot in the winter when you get in. Especially with Autotemp as I usually leave it in Auto all the time. I have never had a problem with it. I would never want a vehicle without it again.
