Before I get into it there has to be a little background laid. My girlfriend, for my birthday decided to enhance my cummins, with keyless entry and remote start. She decided this after hearing me talk about all the reading and research I had done on the topic here on the TDR. So, to be the sweetheart she is she went and had it installed. Well, for those of us who would rather learn, or know what to do when working on our trucks, its your turn to cringe now. So I guess the installer doesnt know his head from... ... well a hole in the ground. So when I am leaning over to get a beer out of the cooler in the back the truck starts its sequence of a timer and then procedes to start the truck, while I am throwing perfectly good Budwiser to jump in the truck and rip it out of gear to prevent a couple of horses from dying an untimely death. Anyways, so the installer and I have had talks to say the least, after I have simply opened up the owners manual of my Viper alarm/keyless entry, and pointed out to him that "this unit is not intended and shall not be used on a vehicle equipped with a standard transmission". So he has taken a few steps back and now is telling me that he can put a switch on the unit so when I dont want to use the remote start I can leave it in gear when I park it. I have once again stated the fact that I WANT TO FOOLPROOF THIS UNIT. I want a 5 year old to safely use the equipment that he has installed in the truck. So he has left me with this question. He tells me that on some transmissions there may be a wire that goes to ground ONLY when in NEUTRAL, I am in no way transmission savy, so I am asking of my technicians on the TDR to help me out with this. IS THERE SUCH A THING ON OUR TRUCKS, AS A WIRE THAT "GOES" NEUTRAL WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL? If not, what have others done to correct this problem, I love the idea of being able to reach out the door, unplug the extention chord, and start the truck without taking my cummins slippers off, and without having to worry about it leaving without me. Thanks in advance for your advice and expertise!!!

Don't know about the wire but it is standard practice in the aftermarket industry im in not to put remote start on standards. Its very unsafe and some vehicles have this wire he is talking about and we will do them but if you truck does not then the best would be to disable that feature.

My brother used to install remote start units, and this was a huge no no. They would not install the unit on a standard transmission truck, ever. Many customers begged ,but he couldnt do it for liablity reasons. I feel this is especially dangerous on a Cummins truck, since the torque at idle is so high,it can do a lot of damage in a hurry running in low gear at idle. :( . If it were mine id have it removed from the truck, for your own safety.

Autocommand makes models for a manual transmission. I have been "trying" to install one for 2 weeks now. Their safety feature is that you have to have the e brake on, turn the unit off, on, off, and then on again, take the key out, open the door, get out and close the door, and then turn the truck off with the remote. The unit will be ready to start as long as a door is not openned (because it could be put in gear).

I say "trying" because I have had over a dowen conversations with them, and they now think I have a faulty unit. It blows a fuse when I try to use the ddor locks, and after I shut my truck off, a relay clicks and I can't remote start it:( After I finally get it done I will report my findings, and the CORRECT wiring diagram:rolleyes:

long response....sorry

I can let you know that my 96 3500 with the NV4500 does not have a netural safety switch (aka ralph nader switch) I installed the remote starter myself and used the open hood trigger wire on the remote starter and hooked it to the parking brake light. if the parking brake is not on it wont attempt to start. I tested the parking brake and its able to stall the truck in any gear except 1st or 2nd. I never leave any of my vehichles in gear and to go that extra step i made a sticker that is on the dash right by the shifter that states is large bold type : "DO NOT LEAVE TRUCK IN GEAR!! This truck is equiped with a remote starter and WILL drive away if left in gear. Please use foot operated parking brake. "

On the rare occations I leave my truck with someone else (dealer, shop, ect) I make it clear to them and ask them to put it on the service writeup.

To sum it up... . I woudl do it again & its the best in the winter to just unplug the block heater and get in a defrosted warm truck!
