I read a post here on how to remove the silencer ring and it sounded so easy that I just had to try it. One spin tight and two small screwdrivers and five minuets later it was done. Now my truck seems to leave all stoplights under high acceleration and freeway on ramps seem much shorter. All passing must be done WOT. Even the fuel economy seems to have dropped . 5 mpg or so. Two additional problems have cropped up. The windows stay down and the radio off a lot. Does anyone else have these problems?   ;) ;) :D

:D :D

Nope! After one long trip to Montana, up several mountain passes, where continual noise is a factor, I replaced my silencer ring.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it, though... :D

JES,

Think it is bad now, just wait until your snorkel gets sucked in, your airbox develops holes in it, and your muffler/resonator falls off. Expect to loose even more MPG. :D :D

To try and make the MPGs up you will justify a box and boost module but this will only make it worse.

Jes let this be a warning.

the loss of my silencer ring cost me a 15 minute lecture from the local sherriff (sp) and a 66 in a 45 citation  He sure loved the truck.

You have been warned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D

enjoy

Yeah, I hear you. If you want more, the Psychotty will about double the volume of the turbo, especially with the A/C set to "fresh air" which pulls air in from the cowling just like the Psychotty :D Be forewarned though, it will drive your S. O. bonkers :D :D ;)

Remove the air snorkle! OK What is it, where is it, how do you do it, what tools do I need, how long will it take? I don't need no stinking snorkle!   :p :p :D

JES,

It is the plastic piece that goes from the fender to the airbox air inlet hole. It serves as a restriction so you should get more air into the airbox for better performance (and less mileage :D ). Speculation is that DC put it on to muffle the turbo whine by directing it inside the right fenderwell. There is some discussion about whether more hot under-hood air degrades performance because of no snorkel, but I've not seen any such indications.

To remove it, pull off the top of the airbox and remove the lower airbox by loosening its fasteners. Note that they are push-on nuts that go over threaded studs. You can take them out by hand - twist CCW while pulling up. Then just pull the plastic snorkel from the fender with a good pull and reassemble the airbox.

Runs better and sounds better too. Just expect less radio and MPG. The only time I drive with the windows up and radio on anymore is when the better half is with me.

If you want maximum turbo music, take off the muffler and resonator. You would be surprised how much music comes out of the tailpipe. All it takes is two cuts and about 5 feet of 3 inch pipe. A muffler shop can do it in less than 30 minutes. Was told my truck sounded like a school bus before - now it sounds just like a Peterbuilt, complete with the turbo warble at idle like a caterpillar dozer makes.

I took mine out last night, after reading this post. I pulled mine out without taking the airbox out, it wasn't too hard, but to put it back in the Box probably should come out. (My truck is a '98. 5)

My Trucks Turbo Silencer ring Ran away with my Muffler and resonator (I suspect a Conspiracy) Then My AirBox Snorkel went AWOL. What to do!! If my truck keeps losing parts like this, I'm going to have to put new injectors, and a computer box to make sure parts don't want to leave my truck anymore!

My MPG Did go down alot right after taking my Muffler and resonator off, but MPG's are recovering nicely now. Then I took out the Silencer ring, and whenever I drive, all I wish for is 15+ pounds of Boost! WISHHHHHHHHH!!!! YeeHaw,, Darn Speed limits keep getting in the way though, LOL.

All I need now are Big injectors to go with my Straight pipe and gauges,, then no Flowersmoke or Duracan will WANT to play with me,, :) That should help my MPG go up :) :)

Add a KN RE0880. Then your truck will sound like a jet engine taking off. And the turbo whine when you let off the peddle is also very cool! My wife hates it but dats tooooo bad, its mine, mine all mine ... ... . muuuuhaaaaaaaaaa!

Your right!! I went and looked for my snorkel this morning and Damn the thing had fallen off over night! My Muffler & Resonator are looking a little loose too.   :D :D

Love that whine!!

When I took delivery of my 2001 Dodge, it wasn't long before the muffler and resonator came off. I loved it, but others thought I was crazy for doing it. They said it's too loud, well it does set off car alarms in the parking garage where I work. I thought I was going to have to see a Doctor for my illness, now I realize I'm not alone. Their are acutally people out there that think like me, now you tell me that I can get more whine removing the silencer. Is this a great country or what? Thanks all you madmen or women who think like me!!!:D :D :D

I bought my 2001. 5 on a Tuesday @ 6:47 p. m. EST and by 7:15 my better half said I was done with the exhaust. By 7:20 she said I was done with the snorkel and a K&N fell out of a bow and into my box one the truck.

If you think thats bad after the resinator and the muffler ran away with the snorkel I got 6 big 3 inch holes in the bottom of my air box, and if that wasn't enough a powermax 2 fueling box and injectors fount their way in some how, and just the other day I noticed someone cut the waste gate out. I think someone is braking into my pole barn. I also have a felling that someone has ordered a 5" exhaust with no muffler. Anybody know someone that can put a good security system in the barn?:D  :D

This Thread

You guys are too much. I haven't laughed this hard in years (at least since I got married anyway. ) Anyway, I think I just heard my daughter tell me that there is something hanging off the bottom of the truck :)

However, call me a dope. But what the heck is a silencer ring anyway? And where is it.

Tom

:D :D :D i think you lose mpg because noe you hear the nice sound so our always on the pedal. at least in case mpg coming back where they should love the music who needs a radio.

Oh happy melody

If you will remove the hose from the air box on the fender to the turbo and look in the turbo you will see a shinny flat metal donut held in place with a locking ring. It looks a lot like an overgrown cup washer. If you take it out your turbo will sing for you. While you have the air filter box open take it off the fender and pull the snorkel out of it and your turbo will sing even more. Now take your truck down to the nearest gippo muffler shop and have the resonator and muffler removed and install a “ test” pipe in their place. Now your Cummings will sing base while your turbo singes soprano and you can hum along and fill in the tenor parts. Oh what a happy melody we sing!!! Roar Weee Rooar Weee Born to be booumbed!!    :D :D :D

I removed the ring a long time ago but does the snorkel make much of a difference?
