I finally got my transmission out to see my broken flexplate. I have been waiting on ATS for over a week because they were out of stock on there Billet flexplate. I contacted Ken at Diesel Performance in Utah and he hooked me up with a ATS flexplate he had in stock. Ken gave me a great TDR deal and overnighted the flexplate to me. Many thanks to Ken and his staff at Diesel Performance, I can't wait to get back behind the wheel of my cummins.

If you upgrade your 48re make sure you do the flexplate. This was not stressed to me when i bought my ATS stage 5. The stock flexplate is paper thin and has holes in the middle where with power upgrades will start to tear the center out.

I would even go as far to say do your flexplate before the input shaft.

Flex-plate ah yes!

Cali-600, good pic's. . Ken is a good guy, and I did the same as you, had Ken changed my TC and flex plate sametime with ATS. I agree with you totally, if money is an issue, when you change the TC change the flex plate at the sametime. The ATS flex plate inmho, is the best on the market, SFI rated and not some "crappy" re-tooled, or so called double plated steel stamped stuff other vendors are pushing off.

Hmm, I guess you might need to do more research. . The DTT Billet flex plate just installed in mine is in fact 1 piece BILLET and SFI rated... ATS does not have a lock on that product.

Either way, I am glad the major players in the market have stepped up to the plate so to speak :-laf

I would agree that you need to change the flexplate if you have a 3rd gen. I was about 1/3 of the way down the dragstrip on my very first run it let go. Mine was the fourth I knew of which let go. I'm just ready to get the truck back now.

DTT Billet flex plate ?

Billa, didn't know DTT had a billet flex plate... Do you have a pic, or a link to a pic so I maybe able to compare with ATS? I couldn't find one listed or piced on their site.

How can Dodge put in such a piece of crap behind the mighty CTD ! I've seen bigger flex plates on a old slant six ! Boy that looks like a real piece of engineering.

Cool

Chris, thanks for the pic. and info... Billua, how do you keep that blue flexplate shinny??   Just kidding. . :-laf :-laf

All of my previous CDT's were 6-speeds... I guess I've got to get up to speed with them der auto's.

I figure about once a month I'll pull the transmission apart and polish it up :-laf

Cheers, Bill

We all have our brand loyalties, but the SFI certification is what's important fellows. It doesn’t matter if it is made of card board :p, as long as it passes SFI certification you will not break it barring some manufacturing flaw in the one you happened to get. Personally (subjective view of course), billet flex plates grew out of marketing and ease of manufacture, I mean those things just look tuff don’t they, and sure are pretty (too pretty for a part you will never see), but billet only doubles the cost for no benefit and has half the "flex" a "flex" plate should have. Go for strength in the SFI rating and don't just limit yourself to solid billet. You could save yourself a lot of cash and be a little easier on your drive train at the same time.

I have had an SFI certified flex plate on since long before ATS or DTT had anything on the market. There are lots of options out there. SFI is the only one that matters. The rest is just personal preference.

I don't think anyone said they had a "lock" on that product.

Oh and BTW this is why I went with the Steel Billet flex plate from ATS.

Flex plate

The flex plate went on my 1990 last year sometime after I had installed an ATS 48RE, with triple lock TC and upgraded valve body. At that time I was getting 199hp at the wheels. I replaced the plate with a BD 1200 lb. ft. heavy duty unit. Works fine. The only problem was having to replace the speed sensors on the plate for the tach, as the sensors were damaged upon removal... ... . BlueDodge

Billua--mine's pretty blue also--and it's been in for 2 yrs--numerous sled pulls--

Richard--now don't be digging up old trash, lest you give someone a black eye---really there's a lenghty post about MADDOG2's DTT SFI flexplate--a lot of pointing fingers and nose rubbing---I thought the final outcome was that there were clearance issues (cummins engine with a ford transmission) that were overlooked and upon installation and the plate was either broken or cracked at that point and was found out after transmission was pulled after a dyno event---SFI reported back that there was no rotational damage I thought---but really I don't know if the whole truth was ever made public---Richard do you care to elaborate???---chris

flexplate

How come all these manufacterers are listing these to '04 and thats it??? Ive got an '05 getting ready to do converter and valve body but all I have is an Edge EZ. Planning on towing normally I dont drag race. Might want to hook sled once or twice. Probably upgrade to BD ram X-power the smaller one, and an intercooler later.

A very redfaced bluedodge

A big oops on my previous post. The tach sensors were damaged when I had the large vibration dampener put on my truck shortly after having the flex plate replaced. Would have been quite an engineering feat though.

From talking to a few DTT installers, they said that the flexplates on the 04. 5 and up we not machined as well as the 03-04 were, that's why they almost make it a requirement on the the transmission upgrades. My installer knows what my plans are for power wise, and I was told until I switch to "twin" turbo's I won't need a flexplate.
