2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Replacing Pinion Oil Seal

1998 2500 NV4500 Dana 80 4. 10 Trac-loc need to replace the pinion oil seal , according to the repair manual the pinion nut needs to be torqued to as hi as 400 ft. lbs. has any one done this & any special tool needed.

Done one, basically use an impact wrench as tight as you can get it. No problems. 400 foot pounds is more than we used, but it has not leaked or given us problems. Ours is behind a v10 1996 3500 DRW, which only gets driven to tow, not an easy life. The guy who told us to tighten it as much as we could repairs truck rear ends for a living at a Ford garage That nut on the yoke was a bear to get off could not get it off manually, took a good impact gun to get it off. The yoke is so tight to the nut I modified a socket to fit (and it was a nice Snap On socket).

My 1/2" impact is strong enough for D80 pinion nuts. Bearing preload on D60,70,80 is set with shims and not a crush sleeve. After replacing the seal and inspecting the yoke for excessive wear, reinstall the yoke and use loctite on the nut. Tighten the crap out of it. Done. The specs are there for a reason, but plenty of these have been done as I described without issue. If you're too concerned, get someone over that has done it before or take it to a shop.

Scribe a mark in the shaft and nut before you take it loose that way you can line the marks back up when you put it back together. It will get you pretty darn close.

Here's a link to a thread with lots of good info plus a few pictures that I posted of the tools that I used to do the job. I rented a torque wrench big enough to tighten the pinion to the 400 plus pound recommendation but as previously stated you could just make it really damn tight and probably get away with it.
