A friend has a 98 24v with 15 psi at the lift pump. It set the following codes P1689-no communication between ecm and injection pump.

P1693-DTC detected in companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine control module.

I took the truck to a local diesel shop which I thought I trusted but now am a bit skeptcal. They said yeah the pump is definately shot but the computer may also be shot-theyre not sure. I'm starting to believe the pump may not be bad so I'm going to take it to another shop and see what they think.

If this pump is bad then why didn't I get a P0216 code?(Inj pump) Also, how hard are these pumps to change-they look very simple. I need good advice here from some experts!!PLEASE

Since you're getting the P1689 I would start by checking the connector on the back end of the pump, maybe even take it off and check the contacts to see that they are clean and then make sure that it is installed tight and the connector is locked in place.

As for as changing out the pump they are not difficult to change, I can probably do one now in an hour to an hour and a half.

Don,t get in a big rush to change the VP44. Mine stalled on me twice

last year and i got the P1689 , I cleaned all the elect. plugs and it,s

been running real good for the last 15K.

Have a good one ---Frank

Yeah I'm going to get it home and try a few more things. I just can't see the pump going with no sign and good fuel pressures. Thanks, I'll take anymore advice so chime in!

how's the truck run---if it's fine then don't worry--these trucks will set codes sometimes for bizarre reasons---remember this stuff is electronic and like stated a loose connection can set a code not to mention other things---so again if it runs normal don't fret it----but if you clear the code and it keeps coming back and the truck runs crappy you will need to get to the bottom of it--you've got some good advice about cleaning and making susre everthing is plugged in properly---another thing is that these engines vibrate a lot and bolts will come loose, so it's a good idea to check exhaust manifold bolts, turbo bolts and anything else you can reach--if the pump has pressure then open up the overflow at the filter and turn the engine over and see how much fuel is coming out(get a bucket) if it dribbles then something is amiss with the pump and guage, but if you have plenty of pressure then it's fine-chris

well that's not good--sounds like the VP--you can loosen the #3 or #4 injector line nut at the head and crank the engine over and see if you get diesel--if you don't then I'd say it's the VP if you do get diesel and it seems like a lot then I'd bet it's something else---stay clear when the engine is being cranked over--you don't want to get blasted with high pressure diesel--you can just stand back and check after the cranking or get into position where you can see, but are safe---chris
