I just posted in 911 and thought we might get help over here a little quicker. My cousin ran his 91 out of diesel and we have done everything but the right thing to get it going. Is there a specific proceedure to purging the fuel system?

Thanks

Crack open the injector lines at the injectors, crank engine no more than 30 seconds at a time, close the lines, do this for each injector. Sometimes it helps to do this in the firing order. If you have to keep cranking the engine, to do this, wait 2 minutes between cranks or the starter can burn up. You may need to go through a couple of bleed cycles to get all the air out. As soon as you do it will start trying to fire. Good luck

Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4 cyl #1 closest to radiator #6 at the fire wall

purging

Did you bleed the filter canister using the jigger pump on the side of the lift pump. Essentially what you have to do is get the fuel to the high pressure section of the pump without any air entrained. I crack all the lines at the injectors and as soon as I see fuel on any of them, I close them all. Are you sure it was out of fuel or do you have a dead injection pump. (Certainly hope you only ran it out of fuel) I have also found that it helps everything if the tank is completly full.

I second the warning on over using the starter. The cummins cranks so quickly that it never loads the starter like the competition. But purging the system is going to give it a real work out.

I carry a five gallon jerry can of fuel on all my trucks. I have never run out of fuel but I have had some purging problems with filter change.

I second everything said so far. Like 1stgen4evr mentioned, make sure you start with the jigger pump first (just below the filter). Before doing this, loosen the bolt (about 10 mm) in the middle of the bango fitting just above the fuel filter. Pump the jigger until fuel comes out of the bango, then tighten down the bolt and lift the jigger up into the locked/run position. If you do not feel resistance while moving the jigger lever, crank the engine for a quick second and try again. No resistance means fuel is not being pumped (this got me one time). Then you know fuel has filled the filter. Then proceed with the cylinders. Because the tank was run dry, you might want to change the filter as well, you might have pulled some grim from the bottom of the tank that you don't want running through your pump. Good Luck!

I think that the starter will not be long for this world with all the cranking he's done. We are getting fuel to the injectors but it just won't fire. Did catch briefly with ether. My gut says something like the shutoff solenoid as mentioned in my 911 request.

Thanks

If the shut off cyl is stuck shut you won't get any fuel to the inj. When we say shooting fuel at the inj. we meen that when you crack the line nut it should be squrting not dribling.
