Losing its mind?

Hi Guys,

On the road in my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD ... but KNEW I should have taken my truck (LOL).

Bad news is that the serpentine belt that I replaced only 18 months ago broke at highway speeds while driving to visit my 98 yo Mom.

I knew something was wrong when changing lanes to pass at 80 mph just took too much steering input effort. LOL

That said, since all other parameters, including coolant temp, stayed normal, I simply kept driving 18 miles to get to favorite gas station where I needed to fill up anyway !!!

Checked engine comaprtment and the broken belt was wrapped around the fan clutch.

Worse news: 133 miles to go and wife had used AAA 200 mile tow a few months ago.
Despite my paying for FOUR AAA memberships for close to 40years, we only get a single 200 mile tow per year. Did NOT know that!!!

After spending TOO MUCH time on phone with more then several NOT helpful AAA personell and supervisors, I simply decided to keep driving while watching for engine overheating.

GOOD news-- drove 34 miles to next town holding speed at 65mph. VERY proud of this Italian TDi-- engine temps NEVER climbed above average. Finally the Battery light came on with 10 miles to go...so I kept sweet talking her (name is Giddyup). ABS lights started flickering with 3 miles to go... I knew voltage was getting low, low and VERY LOW, so I started praying. Took the second exit at SLO, made the right turn, engine died (no more power to ECM) and coasted to a parking lot. YES!!!

Called AAA dispatch again and had them tow me the last 99 miles to Moms driveway at NO CHARGE. Though I DID tip the driver $20 (shhhhhhhh!!!!) since he was competent and very nice and had to drive 4 hours through dinner time.

ANYWAYS, minimal tooling here to fix Giddyup and am contemplating taking her to a local shop if any of you fine gentlemen can give me a SOLID shop reccomendaiton in either Santa Barbara, Ventura or San Luis Obispo.

Of course, prefer close in to Santa Barbara since that is where we are now, but wiling to tow agin to the proper shop.

TIA

Thanks

Gonna figure out what caused the belt to break and then give him a call.

Would love to drop your daughters name if that’s ok and you don’t mind sending me a pm with it??

Thanks Scott
I did contact hector and he is supposed to get back time with an estimate.
That said, using borrowed tools and “enginuity” I was able to remove the heater pump and found a good welder to properly weld the ears back on. Waiting for a serpentine belt and rad hose to come in and should be good to go !!
Thanks again
