Just got back from my local smog shop with the results of the testing.
First of all, I passed. I wasn't worried as I backed out the smarty jr and I have no other mods to the engine.
I was NOT wanting to go to the dealer for the recall flash that Calif said I had to do before I smogged. I took my chances and DID NOT have the flash done and there was ZERO problems.
The smog guys equipment was old enough that it couldn't communicate with my CAN-buss system so that got written off as ok.
He asked me if it smoked and I told him check it for himself and he said it was OK.
He did a visual and said I needed to have a DPF andI told him it was a 5. 9 and not a 6. 7ltr. That cleared that issue up.
JUST FYI for you guys. Oo.

Thanks for the update, mine is the 45 state version and fairly heavily modified for airflow enhancement so it'll be interesting to see what they tell me.

Thanks Chris. I should be getting my notice soon for my renewal. My vin's odd so smog should be in 2011. I'm thinking this is just the beginning of the smog procedures for light diesels. You're good to go for another two years.

Got my registration today... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... Paid online with NO SMOG REQUIRED. It's stock anyway with 93K.

SoCal driver.

You will get it next year. The state is doing odd number ending vin #'s one year then even the next. I don't know which one got it first.

Intresting, Sad though the smog tech thought it would need a DPF, they obviously have no clue what they are doing and we pay the price when they do it wrong.

well they are supposed to look up the year in their smog book to see waht the truck needs to have on it. Guess he was trying to do it from memory glad he doesn't work in the control room at a nuclear power plant.

My buddy had deleted his cat years ago on his '05,but spliced it in for the smog test. He went to a test station that has been in biz forever. The owner checked his vin#,checked for codes, and did the puff test(Smarty returned to stock) never checked under the truck, declaring it passed. After getting his receipt,my friend asked him why he didn't check for the cat. Reply was, " 2005 Dodges don't require a cat only Fords and Chevy's do" The guy was adamant.

In CA, do they use the "Opacity Test"? Here in AZ, that's what they do, annually, for a cost of $28. 00. BTW, the plates for my '91. 5 W-250 were only $20. 19, which, is less than the emissions test!!!!

For the emissions test, here, we sit in the truck, looking at a computer monitor that tells you to put the accelerator to the floor for a number of seconds. They monitor what comes out of the exhaust pipe. My '91. 5 has had the pump turned up with a 16 sqcm. turbo (stock was 21 sqcm. ) & it does smoke. What I do is not just plant the accelerator to the floor but, gradually (but still quickly) push the pedal to near the floor. I believe that the stock rpm's. were supposed to be at about 2600 rpm's. Mine goes up to about 3000 rpm's. so, I just watch the tach. & run it up to the 2600 rpm's. I've owned this truck since new & have always passed the test. One year, their machine would not work, properly, & they gave me a pass after about 10 tests.

The Opacity Test is not supposed to show over 40. 0. The highest I ever got was 39. 9 but, most of the time it is considerably less & even in single digits. I have done NOTHING to the truck & still have widely differing test opacity results.

Many people, here, think that the emissions testing is just a money making venture for the state & I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. However, the air quality in the Phoenix area is better than in the past. What's interesting is that, so many farms have been sold & converted to neighborhoods, now. The farms put up a lot of dust into the atmosphere & now they don't. It's probably a combination of both.
