Checked out the Hummers yesterday

Rick, I have a Ruger 7MM Mag, custom 25 1/4" bbl, topped off with a Leoupold M8 6X scope. I know an old hunter who hunts Montana, Wyo, Idaho, Colorado etc. When I was building my rifle I asked what he used. He went and pulled 4 rifles out, all had the 6X Leup`y scopes. I bought one, no regrets. :D

Damn fine glass... ... ... ... ... .

OK... now that I have decided on the brand... I have narrowed it down to 2 scopes. One is the Var II 3X9X40 and the other is the Var II 3X9X50... it will have the matte finish either way I go...

Thanks for all the comments... I knew that I would get the information that I needed. .

Rick

I'd get the 40. The 50's tend to raise you off the stock too much... when bench shooting this is ok, but for a hunting rifle having a rifle that pulls up to you in focus and feels good to shoot is ideal.

Plus 50's are a bit bulkier and require a little extra care in handling. Just my . 02... good choices by the way.

The 50's will draw more light but I've never had a problem seeing with both my 40's during legal shooting times in Oregon.

I guess that I'll be the voice in the wilderness. I own 5 or 6 Burris scopes and am happy with all of them. I don't own any Leupold scopes. I do have one Zeiss and an one Swarovski scope.

I have been looking for a scope for my Remington 40XB. That Nightforce NXS series look like it might fit the bill.

RHarvey, 40mm is good on a hunting rifle because of the low profile. The Leupolds have good glass anyway so a 40 should give you plenty of light transmission.

MGordon, The Nightforce is a lot of $$ up front but I think you will find out why when you use it.

I run got a couple of leapold vari-x 3 3. 5-10 on the ones that I need to count on and have had perfect luck to say the least. One is on a Sako rifle chambered in 30-378 wby and has held solid for over 600 rds using 180gr. It was on a 7mm rem mag for 400rds before that.

Save yourself alot of time and money and stay away from tasco world class plus. I had one 4 power go bad on a 358 winchester, 2 6powers go bad on the same 7mm rem mag, 1 3-9 go bad on my in-line muzzlerloader. The light gathering is very good on the tascos and so is their no fault warranty. The shop I deal with bought back all except the 3-9 that I wanted to keep on the muzzleloader. It is ok now that it has been fixed. [for now]

R HARVEY - Most any rifle will shoot well enough for a hunting situation. But there are alot of scopes out there that won't fill the bill. Spend as much as you can or more on the best scope available, and if you get one that's "American", just make sure it's a Leupold. Zeiss, Swaro, etc. even better.

Burris, Leupolds both are excellent.

Personally I enjoy a variable scope, always nice to have some extra magnification and check the brow tines/rack size.

You may be going with a guide, if so they won't put you on anything questionable.

Have a great hunt with your son!
