Four CTDs at one residence!

Just thought I'd let you all know what my dumba$$ roommate went and did today...

He decided he needed an air filter for his '03 CTD, and after calling around found that the stea... . dealer was the only one who had one in stock, so, he went and got it, but while there, decided he needed his tires rotated, and heck, while they were at it, he went and had them change the FUEL FILTER TOO!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA Anybody want to guess at what the total bill was? AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA I can't stop laughing at him, cause he paid $160 for what I could have done for $30 in about 1/2 hour!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Air Filter = $39

Fuel Filter = $60

Rotate Tires = $10

Labor on first two = $51

--------------------------------

Total = $160

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHA

Does anyone else find this hilarious? I have told him countless times that I would buy him a Fleetguard fuel filter for $9 from Genos and change it for him for free and same w/ air filter, but NOOOOOO, he just went ahead and told them to do it before asking prices!!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA Jackass!!!

Ok, enough picking on the guy... he's decided that splitting a case of oil and fuel filters with me is a good idea! AHAHAHAHAHAHA

(mind in the gutter...)

Am I the only one who thought that his roommate was in jail and happened to 'drop the soap' whilst he was in the shower? :-laf

I don't know why are you ragging on that guy,we need more folks like that as its good for the economy, somebody need to feed the dealer (ahm... . its not me)... . otherwise if nobody goes to the dealer for service they will close down and we will suffer as we wont have that source of entertainment anymore

I was hoping his roomate was female, but I'm glad I'm not the only one with a dirty mind. Dam XM channel 205!

Some people just can't listen and have to learn the HARD way!

:p

Another thing that I don't understand is that a lot of people think diesel engines require a lot more maintenance and specialized tools so they buy a gasser instead. Actually I think it's the reverse of that. . ya don't have to change spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, etc. Just regular feedings of liquid dinosaur, and change the oil and filters at regular intervals.

The only oddball thing is the OEM crankcase vapor bottle but even that's not too hard to clean, and easy to replace with a hose extension.

I do all of my own maintenance unless it requires specialized equipment like alignment racks then I leave it to a pro.

A friend took his Jeep Cherokee in to the Chrysler dealer because it was getting oil into the distributer. A new distributer and a couple seals and he was on his way, cost 260 bucks plus. Guess what? It started doing it again. So we talked him out of taking it in, we replaced the PCV valve, made sure the vacuum lines were clear, and then no more oil in the dist. Obviously, crankcase pressure was pushing the oil into the dist. Wouldnt you think a certified mechanic could figure that out??

I'd rather spend money where its worth it to get the economy rolling. Not at some dealer. When was the last time a dealer ship went out of business? The neighboring town lost there Chrystler dealership. The IRS came after them for fraud.

Mtngoat, You guys had more info than the dealer on that Jeep. When the dealer worked on it, it was the first occurrance and anything could have been the problem. When you worked on it, you knew the distributor was already replaced and that you'd have to look further. I'm not looking for a fight so take it that way. But ask yourself if you get everything right on the first attempt... ... ... . if you do you're a better man than I.

Had to laugh, you got me there!! I wish everything I did the first time was right. I guess what I was saying is that certified mechanics need to diagnose the problem, then fix it, not just throw parts in it. I have never seen oil that ran uphill into a distributer. Something had to push it and that could only be crankcase pressure. If there is something else let me know, coz I am learning all the time. We didnt have more info than the dealer. We looked at it and the distributer was oily, just like what the dealer saw when he looked at the old one... He saw an oily distributer and replaced it and that was all that was done. Most people wopuld have wondered why it got oily in the first place.

It all boils down to $....

A flat-rate mechanic with hungry mouths to feed at home - could be inclined to toss some parts at it... . beat the clock, go onto the next job, etc.

I'm not knocking the mechanics... . you can't hate the players, but you can hate the game.

I've never worked flat-rate... . and because of that I could always spend a little more time (sometimes I spent a LOT of time... . )getting to the root of the issue.

Mtngoat, I HAVE seen oil run uphill into a distributor. Many have a spiral groove cut into the shaft for the purpose of "screwing" oil up the shaft to insure lube. If the Jeep was a 4. 0 then there a many known problems with distributors and the later oil pump drive shaft/cam sensor arrangement.

Thanks! I learn something every day:)

In this case, turns out, the hose to the pcv was plugged as well as a couple of vacuum lines were pinched. So far so good, but time will tell. .
