Ok, educate me if this is an ignorance thing... my truck's a 6spd and I've observed since I got it that the shifter has pivoted around approx 90* clockwise from where it started. When I got it, the lettering on the shifter knob was more or less perfectly horizontal (parallel to the dash). Now its vertical (perpindicular to the dash). This happened gradually; I noticed it rotated a little each time I drove. It's not the shifter knob; I can crank on that as hard as I want and it doesn't move. It appears the entire shifter has rotated. Anybody else's doing this? Anyone care to explain why it's doing it?

Mine does the same thing, someone suggested a fix a while back involving taking out that center piece and scoring the edges so it will grip and not spin anymore. Just do a forum search and you should find the answer.

Your entire shifter is not moving... it's just the little disc they put in there with the shift pattern on it. Mine does the rotate thing too... clockwise, to be precise. One of these days I'll take the time to try and properly adhere it.

My 94 5 speed did it at a faster rate than my 01 6 speed. Now its a turn in about 30 to 40 thousand miles. Since no one else drives the truck I just occaisionally check progress. I guess if I stay healthy I can see 3 or 4 more full turns. Talk about watching paint dry!

There was a thread on this a couple of months ago where someone suggested a simple cure. Pry the disk out and with a sharp knife or razor make small serrations around the edge. Reinsert the disk and viola - no more rotation. Worked for me!

roating shift lever

Johnstra, when my truck was new the whole shift lever moved (not the shift pattern disc). After having the shift lever almost fall out while shifting I removed the shift boot by prying and tightened the lever down with a wrench. The shift boot then snapped back into the floor console. If I remember correctly the lower end of the shift lever was a female threaded end looked like a 2" tall hex nut. The top of the transmission shift tower was just male threaded.

Rotating Shifter

Ever since I drove mine home I notice the same thing. The entire shifter unscrews. Don't do what I did, one day driving down the road I thought that the ball was unscrewing so I continue to unscrew it and all of a sudden the shifter was in my hand. I was able to get it screwed back in before having to down shift. Lucky Me. I thought that maybe a little of loc-tite might cure this problem. I'll let you know the results.

not the disk

I'm inclined to agree that it's the entire shifter and not the disk in the knob that's rotating on mine. The disk is really tightly seated... I can't move it. I'm still curious why it wants to work itself clock-wise (tighter I suspect).

Let me know if the lock-tite works, Cajun.

You're all missing the point. This rotating shift knob (for those like me that just have the little pattern disc rotating) is a feature. It's rotational period precisely times out the phases of the moon! And I heard the Miss Cleo can read your future in it!

It's funny that they all rotate clockwise. I always figured the direction of rotation had to do with how I hold my hand on the shifter.

This is an on going issue it seems as there was a previous thread on this sometime back. In most cases it is the centre shift partern disc that rotates clockwise. Mine was doing a 360 about every two days. I pryed out the disc, put a glob of silicone on the back and replaced it. No more movement.

It is strange how it moves or even why as the disc is in there very tightly and can't be rotated by hand. Mine was much worse in the hot weather as the the plastic and rubber I suppose expands at different rates allowing for movement.

Rotating Shifter

For those with the rotating shifter, I removed the vinyl boot around stick and took the stick off. I used some Loc-tite (Blue) and tightened the stick back up, pop the disk from the handle then repositioned it. Seem to fix the problem with the shifter turning in my hand.
