Gentlemem,

This is my first thread so if I am doing something wrong just let me know. My buddy has a 95 1 ton 5speed 4x4, he was loaded down with a load of hay (30ft gooseneck dual tandem w/15 1600# round bales) while driving the truck just took off , wide open throttle, he thought the throttle was stuck so he started pumping the throttle trying to get it unstuck, but the throttle pedal was free and not stuck to the floor. tried to turn it off with the key and it wouldn't die. His last alternative was to push in the clutch and let it blow, because he was running out of road. The funny thing is when he pushed in the clutch it hit the govenor roaring black smoke it ibled back dowm running like crap then it died. After hitting the key a few times it will finally start back up but at wide open throttle again. So we let the truck cool of and started it up and it hasn't done it since being 3 days now.

Just wondering if anyone has ever run across something like this?

The turbo would be my first check. These diesels will run on straight engine oil if the turbo seal pops, it will suck it in and away you go.

You can check it out by pulling the intercooler tube off the turbo and check for oil. If there is any then the turbo seal is gone and the system will need to be pulled apart and cleaned.

It seems to me that something is wrong in the pump if it was able to "hit the governor". If the turbo seal went south it seems it would just keep reving until it blew. Just a thought but like the others said for sure check for oil in the hoses.

Check the Throttle Cable

95, 96, and some 97 5 speeds had non-shielded throttle cables that would frayed and either break (resulting in idle only) or get stuck in the cable casing and result in a 'run-away' truck.

There is a TSB for this and a safety recall from the gov't.

So he tried to restart the truck without checking anything under the hood? Well I hope he checked everything first.

How about a simple broken return spring on the throttle cable?

A malfunctioning cruise control?

Let us know what you find... ...

well it dit it again last night. It seems to do it when the fuel gauge is at or below 3/4 empty or less. we have checked the throttle linkage, it has no obstructions. When the truck is in runaway mode you have to push in the clutch let it hit the govenor then it will die, you have to come to a complete stop and start it using the key you cannot just let out the clutch and it will start. The truck is a stipped down truck meaning it has no options on it ,no cruise no nothing. I appriciate all the responses so far please keep them coming. Ryan

Hopefully one of the "Pump Guys" (Joe D. ) will jump in, but if the linkage and cable are OK, I'd suspect something inside the pump.

I'd check the governer lever, could be hanging up on the rack stop (cam plate) or something along that line. Prehaps a broken spring in the govener spring pac.

This is just me, but I wouldn't drive it till I had it figured out.

Good luck, RJR

DRPerkins,

I have a '95 - 5 speed and I had almost the same thing happen. It would either run WIDE OPEN or spudder and stall.

Talk about scary. . big load of hay going uphill it would stall, then in town w/ tight traffic it would tach-out against the governer.

It happened once at about 50K miles, then again at 97K miles. The Bosch dealer told me it was a sticky barrel and plunger inside the pump? (I'm sure that is a very simple way to explain what was happening) The first time they fixed the problem (same pump) the 2nd time the grabbed a rebuilt pump off the shelf and installed it. I'm not positive this is happening with your truck, but it may be a start. The guy told me that it would happen to my truck when it was warmed up. Once the truck cooled down a bit I could drive it. Let us know what you find out. Take care, Jeff
