Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Running #2 Home Heating Oil?

Other than getting snagged by the long arm (highly doubtful) are there any repercussions when running home heating oil versus $1. 00/gallon more #@$%! across the road fuel?

On my last truck, a 94 , I bought a home that had an above ground fuel oil tank, approx. 110 gal. I priced out the cost of having it drained and removed, way expensive, so I talked to several customers, I'm in H/D trucking ind. All of them said it should not be a problem, so I drained out about 10 to 15 gal. at a time and ran it thru. I ran this truck to 240,000 miles with no fuel system trouble at all. I say go for it.

If I remember right you have to run 5-10% LUBE oil mixed with the kero.

Over here in the "War" we use JP-8 with added lubricant, so if home heating oil is similar or the same to Kerosene, I would say no problem, as long as you put some lube in it. We estimate about a 10% power loss with the JP-8, other than that, works fine.

I've ran it for years in all kinds of diesel motors, especially cummins. Run it!!!!

It's not Kero - It's #2 Home Heating Oil (non-across the road Diesel Fuel)



We also run it in the emergency diesel (Cummins 12 cyl) at work. 3. 5 years and no problem. Just wanted to check with the TDR. Thanks for the replys.

When I was shipboard (LPD #1) 80 - 85, we had JP-5 for the helos, boats and emergency generators. I was an "A" ganger but wasn't involved with boats and diesel engines.

It's not Kero - It's #2 Home Heating Oil (non-across the road Diesel Fuel)

You said it yourself... . Its #2 oil. Around here red fuel costs about $10000 per tank if its found on the road i think.



We used about 100 gal of "home heat" fuel up in the reddi heater and some tractors, one of them a puller with a 3-71 detroit. It works just as well as road fuel, but the no tax dye scares me... .

I had a revenue investigator in my store Tuesday morning. He says he's constantly sticking tanks on any diesel vehicle he feels like checking. He says it's most common with farmers and construction vehicles. He also said it is an automatic $2000 fine up to $10,000 depending on your history. He said he hangs out at different places around town (restaurants and convenience stores are his favorites) and just walks up, flashes the badge, and checks your tank. The only time he's not doing this is when he gets a report of tax fraud that he has to investigate. I don't think it's worth the chance.



That said, when I was 18 and working my first real job, there's no telling how much heating oil I pumped into the company big rig for the driver. They had an electric pump that hooked up to the trucks batteries and went down into the heating oil tank's fill pipe.

Thanks for the reply I'll keep my eyes open for them revenuers. $2 - 10k is a hefty fine :--) Hope I'm a bit safer up in my neck of the woods.

I've never seen anyone getting a PU truck tank stuck... . around here theyre only concern is the big rigs.

Out in farm country/the sticks I'm sure things are different.

I first hand have been stuck three times now... twice in my 99 and once in my 2004. Twice (with the 99) it was after I pulled into a rest area along the interstate that had DOT conducting "voluntary" checks... they simply walk up and say, "we are going to check your fuel... " The most recent time with the 2004, I was approached in a TSC (Tractor Supply Company) parking lot.



I thought the main reason I got dipped in the 99 was the fact it was white (work truck white?)... maybe I looked like a construction worker? The other time I assumed they thought I was a farmer?



Don't assume it will never happen to you... they find you when you least expect it...

I've never even been checked in a tractor trailer, but then again I got out of trucking just as the towel heads were making millions of $$$ on selling #2 heating oil as diesel.

Here in NJ, I KNOW there are revenue agents out there working, but I've never personally seen any.

I've talked with the oil truck drivers delivering at work. They said the revenue agent sits at the refinery sticking tanks there.

I asked about this "excuse" and the guy told me a couple things could happen: You get fined. You get fined and you pay for the fuel to be tested, possibly leaving you off the hook. You get fined and they test the fuel, possibly leaving you off the hook. But you are not guaranteed they will even give you the option of "testing" and he indicated that most simply fine you without the option of testing since it is so costly.



This is the reason I don't even use MMO when there is a chance I will travel out of state... I normally run only Howe's or PS anyway... and while most will argue that MMO/ATF will not "tint" fuel enough, the guy told me that ANY red tint to the fuel will get you into trouble... they not only look at it visibly, but have a little doodad that will show percentages of red.

Yeah, I noticed some fuel additives look red in the bottle.



There was another time what appeared to be a farmer driving down a fairly busy street. His truck looked like it had an aux fuel tank in the flat bed. He must have had some malfunction and he was spilling allot of fuel whenever he took off from a light. It must have been his fuel additives, because the diesel was he draining all over the road look plenty red.

Living in the land of potholes I can honestly say that our little pick up trucks are not responsible for them. I agree with the road tax for rigs, not our trucks or even diesel powered passenger cars. Not trying to start an argument just think we pay too much for a product that's less refined than gas. Here in PA diesel is more expensive than high test Why? I don't friggin know. Why can I go across the river into NJ and pay $2. 79 a gallon when it's $3. 19 in my home state? I don't friggin know. :{ :{ $0. 40 / gallon X 30 gallons = $12. 00



So #2 HHO: $2. 25 / gallon X 30 gallons = $67. 50. Versus across the road fuel @ $3. 19 / gallon X 30 gallons = $117. 00. That = $50. 00 not wasted.

Either way it's friggin ridiculous
