Just got back from a 1600 mile trip to OKC. Ol'Doug ran fine up till the last 3 hours, when the temp gauge was riding right at the top of the normal range bar- about 220* while
pulling ANY hill, would drop back to 195* on the level/downhills. This was while running at 75 mph towing 7500 lbs with the AC on.

I've read about thermostat problems here- is mine going bad??

I just drove down along the river for fifty miles. Picked up a radiator full of butterflies. I wonder if you could be plugged with bugs.

Oh yeah, I forgot... Called the dealer service dept. about the problem, and they said I was probably running the Cummins too hard! #ad

Tech said he had a 98 CTD that he couldn't pull his 6500 lb boat over 60 mph! #ad


Something doesn't seem right...
 
Had the same thing happen leaving Nevada Fri. . When I would pull any hill the temp would go up as fast as the boost. Fuel stop at Kingman, Popped the hood and checked the bug screen:: couldn't see the bug screen through the B'flies and bees. Rubbed them off with a paper towl, no more problems the last 500 mi that day. Much easier to wipe off the bug screen than it was to curry comb the bugs out of the heat exchangers before screening the heat transfer devices up front.

Still gonna replace the thermostat as it has fluctuated since install a couple months ago.
The oem never got under or over 190 all last summer ( 110*+) towing, this one runs 160 to 200 even going down hill at ambients below 70 not towing.
