Fuel truck accident

What you’re looking at is a transmission oil pan in a 2017 Ford F550. One of our baby spreaders. Yup! That tin is only 25 months old. The door jamb says 07/16.
I’m going to have to get a new pan and bolts. We paint em with industrial rust oleum here and they usually do well with touching up.
Thing is the big shots think that since this is a newer unit, it won’t need much work.:cool:

Many of the gas engines now have a plastic pan on them. I wonder why the big 3 hasn't gone that way with the diesels.

I had to change out the pan on our old 04.5 fairly early on. I'm surprised that I haven't had to do the '07 yet.

The guy that does my annual Krown applications says the new Ford undercarriages are the worst offenders of the big 3 for corroding early on.

Coming from a guy that you have to book an appointment 3-4 weeks out regardless of time of year I'd wager he sees enough of them to have a fairly educated opinion .

The Ford 6.7 had a plastic engine “sump” early on that had a real lousy 1/4 turn corkscrew looking plug, but now they’ve gone back to a tin pan for that as well and with a real threaded plug.

Were they having leak issues with the plastic pan?

I truly hope you are the exception to the norm. We're all fighting a losing battle regardless of the dang badge on the front.

I'm still planning on not doing any rust proofing on this truck and get rid of it at the 2 year mark. We will see how that goes.

My Rams are quickly turning in to a loosing battle though. Both are showing the limitations of the annual rustproofing and continual maintenance in these harsh winter conditions.

Not to my knowledge, but if it were mine, I’d make a secondary catch or safety. It has a 3/8 Square you stick a ratchet in, and it spins out just by the weight of the ratchet handle.

Don't quote me for sure, but I think my ecoboost has a plastic pan. I'll look when (if) it stops raining.

Without knowing why you are pulling the pan and the miles on the new unit... I am guessing preventing it from failing completely when needed the most.

"I’m going to have to get a new pan and bolts." Wouldn't this be covered under the rust through or other portion of the manufacturer warranty? I suggest one could push the issue even if you have to remove the pan and bolts just for maintenance and it hasn't rusted through yet. Dealer, Sales, and Ford directly. Sometimes they make changes when they find out the bean counter is costing them too much in warranty. Fleet managers beat up sales over excessive repair costs and sales goes back to the OEM over things like this. Early front end trouble with GM pickups and getting a 'discount' on new ones over it comes to mind.

I appreciate the concern, but that’s beyond my pay grade!

I think it should be a campaign, but all I can do is cry wolf. That and sometimes a red flag goes up when ordering parts like this for such a new unit. It’s up to them to spot and address trends. All I can do is make sure this thing is ready for action come November.
Besides, I’m frying a bigger fish with this C&C. If anyone is interested to know more, pm me.

Need to change oil on the Dodge soon, ill take a pic or two of the underbelly. I had all our toys sprayed with Krown oil I'm really impressed with the product. Its only been one year so long term hasn't been realized but NOT ONE SPECK OF RUST SO FAR.
