are any of the 2nd gen trucks running into drain tube clearance problems when installing these turbo's?

just wondering if there is a market for a quality drain tube conversion. AN fittings steel braided lines, etc

i am going to build a set up for my truck cuz as you can see in the pic below there was major interference

does a 3rd gen drain tube have to be modified to clear the waste gate actuator?

thanks, don

All of the s300 turbos are like this. It stinks that the mmoney we spend on these things, that they dont come with a nice SS braided hose.

When I did mine I took the time and used the gas wrench (oxy/act. torch) and did a few creative bends. My drain line has no kinks or flat spots in it.

no brad, i didnt. it is a aftermarket turbo and i didnt expect it to just bolt right on and everything to be hunky dory. guess i could have sent it back to them to the tune of 80 bucks round trip and had them machine me a special bracket for the actuator. or maybe this is a special bracket, i dont know if borg warner supplies it or not? i had seen a pic of a s300 installation in another forum and remember noticing that the guy had squished his tube some. i didnt realize how much squishing was gonna be req tho. lol. i should have removed the bracket and had it machined first. still would have had to squish, but not as much.

i tried that first tony, heated til glowing red but i couldnt bend the tubing. how did you hold the flange secure enough to bend the tube with out ruining the flange? and are you sure all the s300's come this way, regardless of who builds them? if so there are probably a lot of guys that would be interested in a nice drain system. the problem is not just clearance at the top. did you notice how the drain tube got moved away from the motor by about 1" down at the bottom? using a modified fitting simular to what wally is doing for the spinner the whole drain will be a lot nicer. you really didnt expect all that to come in the box did you?

don

Don,

Yeah, I'm 100% positive that any S300 based turbo comes this way. It has been talked about in MANY forums.

I just used my bench vise and heated and worked it then see if it fit and then did it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again. You get my point. My bro also helped me. It also helps that we are pipefitters by trade and have some experience manipulating pipe into small areas.

i spent over 1/2 day on mine - no helper

will work for now but i am not comfortable towing on a long trip with it like that

just found out (24v forum) that the turbo was supposed to come with some sort of rubber angle adapter and flex hose

it did not

don

ps - anyone have an extra drain tube that isnt smashed to hell?

i was told that the 24v motors that went in our trucks got a different drain tube and that it gives clearance in this area

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE PART NUMBER FOR TH2 24V DRAIN TUBE?

thanks don

thank you BJ

wonder if anyone has a pic? (just at the turbo)

doesnt sound like anyone is interested in a S. S. set up...

thanks again

don

ps - called about that billet mainshaft for the 4500...

cant find one now!

Spend the $50 bucks for the quickserve subscription on Cummins' website. You will be glad you did. It has a picture. I'll see if I can post it.

For $50, you can add 5 esn's and have all the parts lists right in front of you.

you don't need that much clearance on the rod. Mine, I just biased the drain tube as far over as I could, marked the interferance point and just barely had to dimple it to clear the rod. I do know that manufacturing tolerances vary on those drain tubes quite a bit, and some will be closer than others for sure

it looks like i went way over board in that pic forrest, but truely i didnt

the nut has to clear it too, when the thing is making boost...

if i could get the camera looking right down the rod you could see how little room it has, but i can not

and look how far off the bottom portion is?

went and bought the 24v tube

dont see how you are supposed to connect the two when the oil filter is in place?

(not to mention it hits my compressor housing - which i really dont want to move again, it is right where it is supposed to be)

Why dont you just fab a drain and be done with it. You could get a flexable style drain and a piece of 7/8 oil resistance hose and put it together.

that ended up being my plan. cut the old tube into 3 pc's and went back to the hose shop again. had em fab up a new feed too, while i was there. but, we were horsin around a bunch and like a dumb butt i grabbed the calipers and measured the inside of the tube. 3/4 hose wont fit over the drain...

i'll fix it

don

ps - i am glad htt found a cure for this issue, just wish i would have known about it sooner...

it is a aftermarket turbo and i didnt expect it to just bolt right on and everything to be hunky dory.

don

:-laf ... tell me bout it ...

I bought a "Baby 55", i. e. HX55-16 hybrid years ago. The adapter for the oil port was drilled off center, so it wouldn't work ... take the turbo back off

Get the new adapter in, almost finis' and guess what, the exhaust flange isn't the right one. :-{} Thank goodness I could swap with the flange on the 40.
