All this talk about locking out OD below 50mph

Does it hurt the trans by locking it out traveling

55mph?Should I let off the go pedal before hitting

the button? What's the preferred or best way to do

it without damaging the trans. ??

Going east from where I live is a hill that goes from 4000ft to 9000ft with a lot of low speed switch backs. Going up it with the OD locked out the TC will lock up in 3rd. I have to stay above 25mph on the curves to keep the TC locked, but the mileage jumps from about 16mpg to over 20mpg. Towards the top I can run in 4th with the TC locked, but if I don't let up on it to push the button, it does some pretty weird things.

Coming down I'll hit the top about 50mph, let off of it to unlock the TC and push the lock out. The shift is smooth. Seems as though if I don't let up on it (going up or down) the transmission gets confused for a second or two.

My BHAF definately helps on the hold back coming down off this hill.

Since we do our fishing on the top, I go up and down it a lot, and at 50,000 miles I still had 50% of my front brake pads left.

Hope this helps.

I had a chat with Bill k yesterday and he told me to drive around in third all day. Says " It is harder on the transmission @ low rpm's. " I was driving around at up to 65 mph with out a problem. Trucks power is from 2100 to 2300 rpm's. Try that for a day. Call bill yourself, he is more than happy to advise on the use of a transmission.

I towed my 36 ft travel trailer to Alabama and back to Texas in 3rd at 2500 rpm, 65 mph. The water temp got up to about 195-200, but other than that it had loads of power and the cruise never came off that speed, even in the hills around Birmingham. I also got about 14 miles per gallon too, which is the same as when I towed in OD but had no power climbing the hills and it had to downshift at the slightest incline. I have since gotten the low power in od reflash, but I haven't towed with it yet.

I hope it don't hurt it at 55 mph because that where I usally go into 3rd when I'm towing it seems to work best for me at that speed, goes right into 3rd lockup.
