Brutus,

The water separator is under vacumn not pressure, hence running the engine with an open water separator is the same as running the tank dry of fuel. The AirDog will bleed itself after you close the drain and bump the starter but now there is air forward of the AirDog that must be removed. You will have to loosen two or three injector lines and crank the engine until the air is bled. Then retighten the injector lines and idle the engine until it runs smoothly. Larry

The trick is...

Jetpilot

I bled the air out by cracking the lines as you said. It worked! Thanks.

Larry

As one of our resident experts you seconded the above solution and helped us understand that the prefilter is on the vacuum side of the pump, but I still wanted to know why the water separator only drained an ounce or so from a container that holds about a pint of fuel.

Charlie Ekstam cleared it up:

To loosen the valve at the bottom of the water separator until the fuel runs is not enough.

You have to completely unscrew the valve right off the threads and pull down on it. This will expose a small black tube about the size of a pencil and two inches long. This tube has a loose fit that allows air to be drawn into the canister while all the fuel is draining out. Works like a charm. I re drained the whole thing and did it right this time. She started right up as usual.

This confirms my faith in this product and the company's support system.

Great product, classy people, worth the peace of mind.

Tip of the day from Charlie:

After you finish the job and you have diesel fuel on your hands, spray them well with Windex... ,wipe and repeat again. Presto, you smell human. The folks in church will sit next to you again and maybe even your wife won't push you away anymore.

13k since install of my FASS, I'm very pleased, rock solid psi even at full throttle (16psi). Only negative is you can hear the pump run (conforting sound?).

I would do it again.

WELL, with *46* responses in the commercial aftermarket LP solution vs a paltry *16* in the Carter-type pusher setups, looks like the FASS, RASP and similar setups win hands-down in term of popularity!

Its very easy to Explain

The better idle claim is sorta hard to explain, unless the system that was replaced was VERY poor or non-functional - PSI is PSI, regardless of whether it comes from a FASS, RASP , OR the stock setup - the VP-44 sure doesn't know the difference! ;)
The Preporator gets rid of the erated fuel. The guage cannot tell the difference between air and fuel it just reads pressure. 14psi of slightly erated fuel will look the same as 14psi of non-erated fuel.

my system was not all that bad when i replaced with the fass. had 9 psi. but when fass was installed, truck ran smooth after . there were only 2 things i notice different after the install. smoother running, and much better fuel presure 15psi steady:) . mpg stayed the same (and i do keep a hand calculated book).
