Found on the GM Diesel Page a '95 CTD Ram owner is pretty happy with his truck and is thinking of another. Has an eye on the DuraMax but I suggested he come on over to TDR and we'll help him get set up with a Cam plate or something and BOMB that truck right #ad
Hope $400 is in the ballpark for a cam plate, I was guessing on that.

DuraMax Uh Oh

I also have a 95 and I would not traded in for a DURAMAX. Mine gets better fuel mileage and so much more power. The key point is when you open the hood to work on it,there is no space. They shoe horned it in that engine comparment, just like a powerstroke.

tell him, that if he does something like mine, even without the exhaust... his truck will stay with a 5. 0 mustang right to 100mph! Ive done it. and with a group purchase, a plate is $200.

Vaughn, with him having a '95, he may want to think of injectors first. I know some guys have had good luck with just a plate in a '95 pump, but I know many others that have had pump failure. We don't want to send this guy straight to the Chevy dealer #ad

As I have said before, I am not a mechanic, but my many days at a pump shop I have seen this happen all to often.

Two words TWELVE VALVE. I'm sorry but the more gadgets and electonics you add to a machine, the more things that can go wrong and the harder they'll be to track down later. That's one of the reasons I don't drive a 24valver #ad
If you look under the hood of a Duramax, it should be enough to scare off any God fearing red blooded 12 valve Cummins owner! One last thing, for the same money this fellow would spend on, say, six months worth of payments on the new truck, he could bomb his Cummins to where the Chevy dealership would petition the city council to throw him out of town #ad

Ford and Chevy have nice diesels designed to last as long as the average pickup truck, under moderate service such as is common for pickups.

When Dodge needed a diesel, a few Dodge employees and Cummins employees made the swap happen on their own. The corporations recognized its success and completed their negotiations. As a result, Dodge has an engine far overengineered for a pickup. It lasts "too long" and can make "too much" power. It really belongs in construction equipment like loaders and backhoes (Case co-developed it and uses it), and medium duty trucks. It is a worthy smaller version of the monster Cummins engines next to you at the truck stop.

Because Dodge "cheated" and put in too good an engine, the competition does not emphasize the cost cutter sources of their engines, with their lesser reputations. They woo buyers with powerful advertising about DURAbility [remember the DURAbuilt Vega], MAXimum whatever, and POWER (from International Harvester, the bane of farmers?).

The Dodge Ram just sits there, clattering like a real inline 6 diesel should, with the word "Cummins" on the door.
