Hat's off to the U.S. Military

Are you a good patient?

There are a bunch of scams going around involving the internet, vehicle sales and cashiers' checks.

There have been a fair number of conterfeit cashiers checks floating around, and this is how the scammers have been normally opertaing. They will say they have someone that owes them money that will send a cashiers check to you for more than the maount you wnat for item bike, parts etc send it to them deduct the shipping and send them the remaider via Western Union. Well by the time the check comes back bad (most checks accept cashiers check as good and give you acces to money upon deposit) and your bank retracts deposit you are out your item, the shipping fees and the "balance" of the cashier check.

Now there is a flip side to this highly sought item listed for sale with pictures (many are internet available pics like sales ads or magazine pics) for real low price. The seller will want to "protect" you by using an escrow service. You send money there and product never arrives, well escrow company was a shill for the seller and they had no product even for sale.

these are two that plaguing the motorcycle industry right now in addition to the Nigerian 419 scams. The first normally involves Nigeria but other countries have been destination.

plus the just plain counterfeit cashier's checks for the amount of purchase. Keep your eyes open and be aware of who you are dealing with.

We got this e-mail when selling a horse for a friend on a website. We didn't know it was a scam at the time, but it sounded too fishy. The so-called buyer was real pushy about getting the money rolling with the cashiers check just like above and that he had a driver in the area that would pick up the horse in the next day or two. We finally told him he was a scammer and to buzz off. (Well I'm sure I didn't write it quite that nice)

i think i just got one today...

If there's a number, call and let them know that you want cash, in small bills, and that they need to come to your home to get the vehicle in person. That should send them packing. Usually when the letter is incoherent with improper grammar, basic vocabulary mistakes, and basic spelling mistakes, it's probably false. I know someone else on here got the same letter about a month ago, with his truck as the item this person was looking to buy. (I assume you have a 1990 3/4 ton for sale? ;) )

I know there was some talk of this sort of scamming a month or so back, both buyers and sellers. The buyers send you a fake cashier's check or whatnot for four or five times the price, then ask you to refund the extra amount. When you do, you find out afterward that the check was bad, and that you just sent a ton of money to the scammers account, and you lost the item you were selling.

You just need to be careful these days and read all the fine print, even contact sellers and buyers to see if the item is legit.

Its a real problem on Ebay right now. There are tons of people doing this. I read a post on the snow west web site about a guy who sold his sled on ebay with no problems. He went on ebay the next day to look for a new sled and found his for sale again at 2K less than he sold it for. The guy selling was in italy... .

When in doubt take cash or tell them sure you can buy it, but you can not pick it up till the check clears, or use your own escrow service.

Good luck and keep your eyes wide open.

You have to go beyond the check simply clearing. There is a period of retraction as I understand it between banks. Sometimes it takes a while to process those transactions and if it's found to be fraudelent down the line they can charge it back to you. Check with your bank about that before accepting any large sums.
