Recently I purchased a "machined street cam" from Kent Crowder@ Scheid Diesel for my 04. 5.

Scheids it seems is the only company marketing a cam for the 3rd gens at this moment to the best of my knowledge.

Friday it was installed and I picked it up.

First half hour of use, I was instructed to let it idle by Kent.

After that I took it easy and drove it about 14 miles home. The next day I drove it roughly 80 miles and kept the rpm's down and kept the foot light on the pedal.

Today I took it for another spin, about a 3 hour drive down south and back home again.

By now I cant get over how much quieter the truck runs, and the engine runs smoother to boot!

Turbo spool up is even faster than before, and mileage has gone up 2mpg with on highway driving.

4 hours of driving and I used a 1/4 tank of fuel and this is an 04. 5!!!!

Im still amazed at the mileage!

I have only romped on it a couple times and it was enough to get it sideways a hair at about 70mph with the TST on level 2x5;ez-3.

Spool is even more instantaneous!

BTW Drone is gone, engine is quieter on the interstate, noise tone has changed some a little deeper but overall quieter.

:D

That's great, I'm glad you're happy.

It's good to know that someone is making parts for the 3rd Gen. trucks.

Let us know when you have figures on HP & MPG increase.

Cam replacement

PM me pls,. . I'd like to know the cost involved. So you indicate a power increase,. . did you do a dyno b-4 and do you plan on one after? Any change on EGTs? Anything other than the cam changed out? Did they give you the grind specs on the new cam and was it a factory cam reground? Tks for info.

Cost of cam is listed on Scheids website.

I had a friend of mine that works on Cummins trucks do the swap for me.

I don't have the grind specs and Scheids requires a core return so that tells me this is reground.

jwilliams3-

I always get a kick out of reading your posts because when I click on your reader's rig gallery "STOCK" is really emphasized for some reason!!!

I wish you could have gotten at least a comparison look between the two because from what I hear there is a ton of overlap in the common rail motors.

Scheid put one in my truck last April. I can't really comment on exactly the difference, because there was a lot done to the motor at the time. I think it does lower EGT's, it has to, I can run my TST on 8/8 or 9/8 all day long.

jwilliams3-

Any more updates?

Also, if the new cam has more advanced timing than the stock cam does it mean that you have to run lower overall TST settings now than before the swap to get the same benefits power/torque wise?

Truck is very quiet on the interstate.

Power and performance seem very consistent overall.

Mileage is still up about 1 mpg or so, but my heavy foot compensates for that.

I would call Kent Crowder at Scheid diesel and ask about the specifics of the grind.

Cost is not bad either, the Cam is under $500 (installation is about the same or more, give or take).

I recently did a WOT run with the TST on 7x7 and I could only hit 1100* :D

One more supplier

Piers Diesel is also doing cams for the 04. 5-05s. They offer several of them and have done extensive testing.

Prior to the cam install what would your egt have been under the same scenario????

Honestly, I don't know.

The Turbo and Manifold have only been on since December.

The Cam has been in for a week or so now, about 1000 miles on it give or take.

Oh yeah, the B104 along with ATS manifold.

If you want huge reductions on EGT your going to have get a bigger/better turbo.

A Cam is not a must, but something I wanted.

Have gone the cam route on my second gen and have enjoyed the results, and should expect the same with the third gens. Anybody have some Dyno numbers?

Moved a lot more air :). That is a good point you make. It's seldom that we only make one change when we dive into these things. I did cam, ported head, 370 injectors and torque plate. That configuration yielded 414 with the stock turbo and a slippy clutch. Sure makes it hard to put a number on only one of the components contribution.
