Before I hook up my new Edge Comp, I was wondering if anyone has found a better "undetectable" way to hook into the injector pump wire OTHER than the supplied "Scotch Lock?" If DC mechanics are being told to look for the pierced insulation as evidence of a "box" installation, I was considering soldering a pigtail at the other end of the wire, where it attaches to the ECM. Then just unplug it and tape over it if visiting DC. Comments???

Ed, do a search for Blue Chip pump cover. I have not seen one but have read that it will do what you want. I do know that the wire you need is not accessible anwhere but on the pump, that wire is from the pump controller in the pump to the solenoid. The new connector from Edge is pretty stealthy, but still pierces the wire and can be seen if looked at hard.

It has also been reported by several guys in the know that the ECM records data that will tell the tech that there was a box on there even if there is no physical evidence.

IMO, if you tap the pump wire your drivetrain warranty is gone and you have no recourse.

EDIT: spelling error

There are a couple of ways to go... . Blue Chip Diesel has a neat little replacement cover for the VP44, that pierces the wire in a very unobtrusive location...

TST Products has a new connector also, that works great... .

What's wrong with the "needle" connector supplied by Edge? It actually doesn't leave any trace... I had mine off after 50,000 miles with it on there, and it took me ten minutes to find the original hole, even with a good flashlight.

Be aware that any box will leave telltale patterns in the ECM, that a very savvy mechanic can bring out, if he notices any abnormalities... it's not likely to happen, but is a possibility, in the bigger, more expereinced dealerships...

A "Scotchlok" ??? Is that what Edge is supplying now? If it is an actual brand-name, honest-to-god Scotchlok, made by 3M, or any other imitators, DO NOT USE IT ! It will not give you a good electrical connection, and may even ruin the wire.

I was under the impression that Edge was supplying their original "needle" connectors. A little black two piece plastic thing, with a wire ? That's not a Scotchlok! I vote we call it an "Edge Connector" , to prevent confusion with inferior products.

And, BTW, I may work for 3M, but it's not in a division that makes that junk. 99% of the rest of what 3M makes is fantastic.

There is a plastic pump cover replacement available ,so you dont have to pierce the pump wires where they are visible . Just put the oem cover back on for the dealer visit. Its available from Blue Chip diesel for $ 50

Yeah, any of the so called "non-detectable" boxes CAN be detected. I have done it before, but you have to do a little diggin' to get to it. Most DC dealer****s won't be able to find it, much less know what to look for.

As for making a connection... DO NOT USE A SCOTCHLOCK. I have had many troubleshooting jobs where the culprit has been a POS scotchlock. The best way to make the connection is to solder the wire, but if you do that, you are responsible for replacing the pump.

Briar, I purchased my Edge Comp in late November/early December from DTT and it came with a Scotchlock... not the small pin connector my Power Edge came with. This must be new, as the installation instructions refer to carefully installing the pin type connector halves. Oh well, no sweat, I'm not using either one anyway! :D

I'm using my BOMBed Blue-Chip replacement VP44 pump cover. :D:D:D:D

YUP! It's definitely a cheap, blue, squeeze-the-wire-over-the-metal-wedge-cutout, connector just like the ones that last a day or two on trailer light connections!!!

Thanks for the tip on the pump cover... I'll check it out!
