I just finished installing the Scotty Air System. I used K&N #RE-0880. The Air Box hose has a Little bigger ID than the OD of the flange on the filter. You have to clamp the air box hose over the filter flange to connect. It was tough to tell if it was a tight leak proof connection because of the flexible rubber to rubber clamping surface. So what I did was take a piece of new 4" ID exhaust pipe I had lying around and cut a piece about 1 1/2 inches long. (Too long and it will butt up against the ribs on the Intake hose and will not sit flush). Push it into the rubber flange of the air filter until it bottoms out at the step. You should see about a 1/2 sticking out. Next I just slipped the Intake hose OVER the rubber air filter flange and had I nice round rigid surface to clamp the Intake hose to. No way this is gonna leak now. If the worst possible scenerio happens (the pipe works itself free, Which it WONT, it will get hung up at the ribs in the bend of the Intake hose) I tested it just in case. Initial test drive was great. With the silencer plate removed and the scotty air system in place the turbo whistle is LOUD!! Just a Tip a wanted to share.

I just finished my Scotty system installation too. My friend is bringing over his one week old PSD (crewcab,or he'd have a Dodge), I told him if he did I was gonna drag him around the field till he yells uncle. Now with the new cleaner, I should have improved PSD towing capacity.

I used a 4" piece of metal flue pipe and clamped the cleaner on one end, and the intake tube to the other. The tube is maybe 1/4" larger, but it did clamp down ok. I'm gonna take a look at what you describe.

You ever loose tools between the intercooler and the radiator? Man I swear they jump in there! I'm used to stacking tools on top of the rad. and for no apparent reason they fly into the gap between. I'm gonna make a shallow sheetmetal pan that will have feet which will lock onto the valve cover to set tools in.

HVAC, I have had tools fall down in between the radiator and the intercooler too. What a pain in the neck. It took me 30 mins once to get a screwdriver out. Id almost get it out and it would drop... . lol... . not funny at the time though. I have one of those pick up tools that has the retractable claw and one with a magnet on the end just for that purpose... ... ... ..... LOL

That's a good job Mark, I wish I could provide a picture of the tool tray mounted on the valve cover of your engine with those high priced Snap on tools arrayed so logically.

Snap-On? Nah, still a craftsman fan. Easier to find and gives me a place to 'hide-out' whenever I have to go to the mall...
just went there today as a matter of fact. Needed oversized deep sockets when I put my grill guard and brush deflector back on. The baja lasers use a 15/16 socket, and the PIAAs use a 17mm socket. Sure would be nice if everyone could make up their mind; english or metric? One or the other please.

I took the pics with a friends Sony MVC-FD83 digital camera. Really nice, takes some super hi-res shots and all on diskette. Maybe if I didn't put so much $$$ in my truck I could afford one!

Hey guys,

I used a small section of 4" ABS DWV pipe. I "borrowed" it from a job we were working on the other day. Works great, and seals everything up just right.

I was rummaging around today and ran across a chrome tip which I had intended to give to CCollar. Turns out it has a female side which matches the air inlet tube, about 4 3/16", and the balance is 4". I'll cut it down to a length of approx. 2. 5", deburr it well, and exchange it for the 4" flue pipe I originally used since it is a closer fit. CCollar is installing those dual chrome 5" stacks anyway (like Dave Mitchell) so he wouldn't be able to use this chrome tip anyway.

Seen pictures of the Scotty, what purpose does it serve? Appears that the engine is now sucking in under hood hot air.

The hot air thing is a raging debate. The short answer is I personally don't think it's any hotter then if going through a hot-air-oven-airbox; and it's still getting all the 'cool' air from the fender. The long answer I posted https://www.turbodieseltrucks.com/kn.html . But there are some extremely respected experts who disagree with me so weigh all factors.

I also have a 3" metal dryer hose coming up from just behind my right tow hook to feed cold air to that filter and I have the fender inlet piece aimed at the filter.

Today I did some measuring and have found a REAL GOOD place to get a constant and high velocity flow of outside air... I am working on a shroud and complete intake system... I'll post the finished product ASAP. It will be available in stainless or black, red, gray or blue thermoplastic coatings. #ad

I have a few other things up my sleeve for a complete pkg for the beloved RAM! #ad

Now your talking Scott. I can't help but dream about some sort of scoop on the hood which would let air in right on top of the Scotty system.

Tom the new cleaner is much larger and capable of more air flow. Some of us are soupin' up our engines and feel the stock box is inadequate. Of course the other thing is modification fever.

I have a hood in my garage that I got from Robert Patton -- a steel cowl induction hood that can be used as a functional cowl. I would need to come up with some sort of ducting from the hood to the air intake, but I am sure it could be done tastefully. Too many projects -- too little time.

I installed an K&N E-1796 last friday, talk about turbo whistle it sounds like it is riding right next to you in the cab. I used about a 5" piece of 4" PVC condiut to extend the filter back into the corner of the fire wall and fender. I think I will get some stainless steel or aluminum a shape an L piece to attach where the stock airbox does and go over towards the engine and them bend a 90 and go up towards the hood and extend this forward to near the radiator to help separate the hot air from the engine and the filter. Not near as good as what it sounds Scotty has to come but until then it should do.

Rob, that sounds like an option (the hood), what was the origin of the hood. Is there something manufactured which is functional? Is the hood you mentioned available on the aftermarket? The other hoods I've seen are mostly cosmetic. I intend to create a ducted area to shield the turbo off from the air to the cleaner. In effect a new and larger airbox which will still be fed via the hole in the fender. But it is fun to think about scooping air off the hood to get a pressure increase in the airbox, or at least introduce cooler air into the turbo.

HVAC,

I'm not sure where the hood was purchased, but I assume there is only one manufacturer of this particular style. It has holes in the rear of the cowl to allow air intake and I am sure that with some creative ducting, this could be directed to some sort of ram air set-up. Here's what it looks like:

I just got off the phone with K&N. The RE-0880 has a special pre-filer that fits the conical design of the Filter. It is Part # 22-8035pk. It is available in black only. Price is $57. 80. He said retailers sell them at much less. If somebody finds a good source for them (Summit will have to order them) post it... . I agree with you Brett. The turbo whistle is LOUD. I have the noise plate removed from the turbo too. I have an exhaust blanket from Genos garage and my exhaust pipes wrapped with Thermo-Tec header wrap. Under hood temps are not hot AT ALL. I just got back from the store in 55 degree temps and the filter was cool. There is a noticeable difference in throttle response with the Scotty Air System. I did not realize how restrictive the OEM air box is!... ... ... ... . just my opinion :)
