I'm getting quite a few bugs coming through my grill and naturally, into the radiator vents. With summer coming I'm sure it'll get worse. Does anyone know of a screen or something to either go on front of the grill or possibly the front of the radiator to prevent this?

Thx
K-Man

Your not gonna believe my answer, but I recommend putting a door mat in front of your radiator. I did this back in the winter to help my truck run hotter. I decided to leave it in until the weather warmed up and the temp guage moved over to the middle.
Well, these trucks run cold and the temp guage is still not close to the middle, even when pulling a big load at highway speeds.
This keeps your radiator clean and helps your truck run a little warmer (good). Cost is only about $7.
I cannot take credit for this idea. I got it from someone else on the TDR board.

K-Man - I went down to my local hardware store and bought some bulk screen, paid a couple of bucks. Cut it to fit and tie wrapped into place. That's one of the first things I did when I bought my truck in 96. I don't know why because there aren't any bugs in Alaska #ad
Radiator still looks new. Every once and a while I wipe my screen clean.

In my area they oil then gravel the roads twice a year. For 2-3 weeks after they do it gravel gets kicked up constantly. I had many small dings in my intercooler and radiators after just one graveling last fall. I put Stull's SS grill & bumper inserts on my truck and now no more dings. It's a stainless steel mesh that even stops most bugs from getting in. You remove the honeycomb inserts the factory put in and replace them with these. I bought them online through Summit racing for approx. $165 for the set (here's a link http://store.summitracing.com/product.asp?ssid=28D4G7PIEYPKFPCFNBI6ICOWF5&p=A6ED2A00-3612-11D3-949D-080009FC5B5F ). Thanks guys. Great suggestions. It looks like there are a couple of different ways to go here.

Alaska Bee, where did you connect your screening? To the backside of the grill? The front side of the radiator?

K-MAN, I tucked the screen under the upper support and used baggie ties to hold it to the hood bumpers. Its cut to go below the condenser and is in front of ALL the finned units. Open hood, and there it is. Helps with the "sage brush" runins also. No sticks and limbs in the cores. Takes a minute to replace or loosen and brush off. Used the fiberglass in black and its not noticable with the hood down. No heating problems and can still use a cold front between the intercooler and radiator (not in front of the intercooler - been there done that and it drops your mileage by making the intercooler grab heat from the radiator). The intercooler needs all the air flow it can get, ALL THE TIME! There was another thread on this a long time ago.

K-Man, I used 4 tie wraps. One on the left side upper corner (facing engine), wrapped the screen around highest hose and clamped tie wrap around hose (through screen). Same on right side upper corner. In the middle are two holes on the bottom corners of the brackett for the hood latch. Tied through there to the screen. The screen is just "draped" down to the inside of the bumper. Even covers bottom holes. Haven't had any problems with that setup. I had to go out and look at it to remember how I did it. Wiped a few bugs off while I was at it! #ad

I bought mine new this winter, no bugs around at the time... I rushed down to Lowe's Home Improvement(Home Depot might have one too) and bought a screen kit... it consists of 4 rails that can be cut to length, and fit together with little press-fit angles, then the screen can be splined into the grooves and trimmed.
I measured the radiator area carefully before cutting the rails and making the screen. It's tie-wrapped (electrician's cable ties) into place, and the top middle section is bent back for about four inches, to clear the hood latch. My radiator and condenser area is completely protected. #ad
Yes, it's tie-wrapped to the radiator area, not to the hood. Total cost, $11. 00, including spline roller tool.

One of the first things that I did in 1992 when I purchased my truck was to install some window screening between the grill and the radiator. Works great - I just periodically clean the screen. The price was right.

I like vinyl screens better than metal because the bugs and road grime hardly ever
sticks, had them for years and never had to
clean them.
