Typical. Loser politicians and their "technical" management appointees make stupid decisions based on salesmen's lies. The taxpayer gets gored. The poor results get swept under the rug. The losers go elsewhere using their years of "experience" as a plus to get higher paying jobs in other locations where nothing is known about the facts. Meanwhile they become masters at blaming others and obfuscating, like in the article. It is noteworthy that while Cummins made the best mpg, they haven't gone back to Cummins, afraid of admitting their incompetence to the voters and taxpayers.

BIG goverment sucks.

Direct Quote from the Article--------------------------------

The Italian-made Bredas are notorious for the expense of their repair. Metro initially ordered spare parts from the manufacturer until Metro technicians could become more familiar with the buses and learn how to substitute lower-cost American parts. That resulted in $258 oil filters that could be bought locally for $4 and radiators costing Metro $6,292 that could be bought in Seattle for $742.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

How could there possibly be a learning curve on a $250 filter. Any Jack***** knows you just don't buy the thing. but leave it to gov't to call it a learning curve!

Kind of reminds you of low-flush toilets, eh? I love it when the greenies design our vehicles and politicians design our plumbing. My CPA just called with the results of my taxes this year,:::---don't ask!

And while I am ranting :-{} , can someone explain to me: diesel trucks from the last year or two, all three brands, are generally getting 10-25% less mileage than just a few years prior. EGT's are typically up 100-200 degrees. How is that helping with global warming  and reducing our dependence on our middle east buddies. My hands are currently ready to encircle the neck of any available tree-huggin, granola eatin, E. L. F. wind power, left wing, bla, bla, bla,. Ok, I feel better now. ;)

Yep this is such a wonderful state to live in. Seattle area politicians dictate how the rest of the state goes, and sit there and make big screwups like this

If they possibly treated this like a business, they would have actually demoed a couple of buses for a few months to see if indeed they performed like the manufacturer claimed. But nnneeeooooooooooooo, that would make too much sense!! :-laf

I love the part where it says the maintenance will be less on these than the old buses. YEAH RIGHT!!! Let them age a couple years then see how expensive it gets to be when they start having to replace batteries, expensive drive motors, and control systems managing the hybrid processes.

They didn't have much choice in engines, Cummins couldn't get '04 Transit EPA cert for the 330hp rating (standard for 60' coaches) at time of order. Also the Cummins in the prototype coach wasn't certified, so who knows what the MPG would have been. Don't believe everything you see in the paper ;) Wish I could say more.

I am down in CA and these tree huggers tried the same thing on a smaller scale, in Coronado. Lots of money here but at least they gave it a limited run of two hybrid busses for a year. They did not make it into the second year because of parts cost so they are back to the old CNG units. They actually showed a bit of common sense and suprised everybody by making the right move for a change!!

You have to remember, the EPA mandates result in lower fuel mileage.

More fuel used the less polution???

E eliminate

P petroleum

A altogether.

All at a time when the world may be running low on it.

They need to run low on------consumer pockets.
