1999 Cummins 5.9. Bought new. 168 k. DTT transmission valve body smart controller BD exhaust brake at about 50 k. 275 hp injectors and edge box pushing about 300 hp. transmission was built for that by Bill K. I’m in Anchorage Alaska. Today I thought I left the emergency brake on. Released it a couple times and realized I wasn’t starting in low gear. So I have a new governor solenoid and have had third gear starts etc before the rebuild years ago and have had the pan down and changed fluid and filters many time over the years in my garage on a creeper so I know how to do all that but at 71 years old and one replaced hip and two knees my creeper days are over I could get down but never back up more than once maybe ???on ward what to do truck is still good I don’t really drive very far or much anymore. But I don’t need a new truck. Should I take it in and go for a repair or a total rebuild. If I can find a good shop that uses performance parts I will go that route on a rebuild. I can’t drive a stock transmission. Boring. Anyway do you think thegov solenoid would fix it or not. Or at 120 k go for a rebuild. Advice and ideas always appreciated. Thanks

Governor solenoid thanks for the quick reply. On Monday am I will call around to find a transmission shop that will change my fluid and filter And install a new solenoid. I wonder if it will hurt to drive it a two or three miles to the shop. I have a transmission temp gauge and it never got hot. Maybe 150 f today Don’t want to burn it up

Manually shift in and out of first. While sitting at red light I will put it in first, start rolling and go to Drive. That way it starts in 1st.

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago on my '99. I took it back to the shop that rebuilt the trans. He test drove it and the first thing he checked was the trans relay in the PDC. He swapped relays and that solved the problem. Same symptoms as yours.
good luck greg

Don't forget the transducer too. While in there, I'd replace the accumulator piston and spring,, especially if you have a stock-style plastic one. Good luck

I have found a transmission shop in town that I’m going to take my truck to next week. Shop is 8 days out on its work. They seem to understand and replace gov pressure solenoid with upgrade parts. So a flush and filter and new fluid is were it all will begin. $500 quote. If it’s more then a rebuild using bd parts. Seems I there’s a dealer here so that’s good. Money will go up of course . I have a bd exhaust brake and DDT smart controller to lock up the torque convertor and slow everything down. I still think the cost of a rebuild is better than and cheaper than buying a new truck and starting all over again. At 71 I just don’t go as much and far anymore and can’t justify the money . Do they sill make smart controllers to lock things up or how does bd do automatics now. Mine was done a long time ago. I hope they can fix me up on this. Once you drive a truck with a real transmission and a exhaust brake it’s no going back

I've had the ATS lock up Commander for around 13 years and it's been flawless. I also have the potentiometer to control OD shifts and bypass the throttle position sensor (TPS). One of the best mods to date and super cheap.

I have been on bd website. They have a bd pressure loc and bd diesel auto lock that locks up the torque converter so the exhaust brake works. In case my smart controller is toast. Time will tell more later

In the interest of making a useful post that might help someone in the future here goes. I took my truck to my local transmission shop 8 am drop off yesterday. About 2pm I get a rather pleasant call from the tech that’s working on it. Sorry he won’t get truck done today. I said not a problem. Wasn’t even going to call in for three days no rush. Anyway. Not second gear starts but third gear starts In limp mode. He says it has several codes and he still trying to figure what’s the problem s. Has not dropped the pan yet. Seems to understand my set up very well. I left a note in the truck with a rough view of what the truck has on it. Etc. and to call me if he had any questions. My truck is not stock Anyway that’s we’re we are at now. I told him I want to keep the truck take your time and do it right and thank him for the call

Ok two days at the transmission shop. Truck still in limp mode third gear starts. They put it on their machine read the codes lost some but one code remains. They said the can’t figure out what’s wrong with it but they feel it’s a electrical issue not a transmission problem and are past their expertise and I need to take it somewhere else. They gave me a name of a local place. I called them they don’t do anything older than 2000. This shop gave me another shop. They are 3 weeks out and I’m on the schedule to take it in MAY 28 th. When the tech took it out of the shop so I could come bring it home he said the truck completely died on him. But did a restart right away. So I have something loose or bad connectors or oil and dirty connectors bad wiring or something. Maybe power control module is bad ? Who knows Any ideas would be appreciated.

Terry, here is the DTT jumper after relay delete

This is how it looked before the mod
pdc jumper 1.jpg

They essentially jumpered pin 30 to 87 .
Make sure there is 12vdc at pin 30 or on the jumper.
