leaky gasket

I finally got some bad fuel. so after this experience I have decided to add secondary filtration. After doing a bit of research I decided that the Mopar severe duty filtration kit part number 68038353 AB would do the job for my needs. Well when I got the kit I was disappointed with the quality of the filter head and then I realized the most important part... . the filter. this kit comes with a Mopar only filter part number 6883826aa. mopar had changed the thread size in the filter head down to about 5/8 so that only their filter will work with it. I tried to return the kit but since the package was already opened I was not able to. so my search for a new filter head lead me to this. CUMMINS 5. 9 FUEL FILTER KIT WITH DIESEL PRE HEATER it is part of a kit that originally came with the fuel pump and fuel lines and it is made for the cab and chassis model truck. but it has the proper filter head for use with fleet guard filters. I figured somebody here on TDR may want this kit and yes I did pay 49. 95 for it. if you call the number in the link asked for Mark.

Your link indicates: $4,995. 00 "Typo" ? That's one heck of a difference. .

Aside from the pre-heater, would not a GDP 2u aux filter kit suffice ? Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail

I like this set up... easy to change the filter for sure... . . how often does this filter get changed... . the same as factory... . i do every other oil change???thanks

Every oil change, 10 to 12K, I also do the OEM filter too at the same time with a Napa Gold.

I believe the $4995 is for the lot of 100. if you scroll to the bottom of page you'll see that they have each kit valued at 49. 95. I didn't know if they would sell an individual kit so I gave them a call and found out that they would. the kit that I received came in a factory Mopar box. I should also make clear that this is not a direct bolt on for the pickup. you will need to modify the bracket and come up with some compression fittings for the fuel line.
According to the instructions the service life for the filter is every 15,000 miles.

I don't meen to down Dodge but JMO they could have done a better job on fuel filtration knowing how picky the injectors are. I think anything you add that betters the job at hand would be fine.

Does the filter head have the "threaded insert" in the filter head? If so, can the insert be removed and replaced?

I found a threaded insert in the Fleetguard catalog #3950622s. I can't find any thread sizes or length of the insert. There is also a retrofit adapter kit #3837317s that was listed on another thread. The threaded insert was used to fit a fuel heater to a none heated filter head.

I see you note the thread size is different, but is the filter gasket the same diameter as the old style fuel filter?

I have the old kit on my truck and the filter head quality (looks) is not so good. But it works and it does not leak. Hay, after a few thousand miles under the truck, who will be looking at the quality of the filter head casting? I don't have any dimensions for the parts, but if you could "start the ball rolling" and provide the dimensions of the new kits parts, all of us on this forum could possibly find a solution to fitting a more standard filter to the kit. Also, it would be nice to find a replacement filter that fits that head as it is. Chrysler does not make filters. There should be filters out there that fit that head.

SIDE NOTE; If anyone from Chrysler is reading this, a lot of potential customers that like to use factory parts also like to have a second point of purchase and supplier of the filter if Chrysler stops supplying it. If this is a Fleetguard filter, have them offer the filter at the same retail price. From what I have seen of the new kit, it's what every one wanted in the kit. The price is ok. It does not have the fuel pump and lines that were not needed. The filter does double duty as a water stripper and 5um filter. But, people are not feeling warm and fussy about having only one place to buy the replacement filter.

I have the older Mopar SDF kit and it has a heater and 1-14" filter head, a much better setup IMHO. The filter isn't rated as fine, but it's the first filter in line, and a primary filter not a secondary.

I highly recommend a setup with a f/w sep back by the transfer case (I like the BF1212), into the OEM canister, then into a GDP filter head with a Donaldson P551313 on it. Your filtration will be far better than Bosch recommends.

Click on the link in my sig to see my setup.

Every oil change, 10 to 12K, I also do the OEM filter too at the same time with a Napa Gold.

If you are talking about a Napa Gold fuel filter I would run something else, the Nape (Wix) doesn't meet OEM specs on filtration and they won't release info on f/w separation rates.

OEM fuel filter service intervals are 15K miles, I would use 15K miles unless you have indications of clogging filters. This includes any additional filters, as it is easy to over service fuel filters and lower your overall effectiveness. With a fuel psi gauge you can extend the life of your filters.

Reading through and looking at all the pic's from the link. Noticed in pic #17 the OEM setup. I have been wondering what the OEM bracket with holes attached to the driver side of the frame were for and it appears they were meant for mounting that kit. Yes ?

I'm using the BF7633 on my GDP. As for the NAPA, I was told it was a newer design and better filtration. Now that you advise, I am going back to the store for further discussion with the staff who also owns a 05 like mine.

I also use Fleetguard canister FS19856 filters.

That bracket is for the gas tank emissions junk on a Hemi (same frame from a 2500 hemi thru a 3500 DRW, given the same wheelbase). Dodge just took advantage of already present brackets when designing the kit.

Using the same standards the BF7633 is a 7um absolute filter, whereas the Fleetguard is 5um, Cat is 4um, and Donaldson is 3um. Using the standards that Baldwin promotes it's 4um, but you have to compare apples to apples. The best filter in that series is the Donaldson P551313.

The 33585XE is 8um absolute, and 6um at 95% according to Wix's website. Minimum OEM spec is 7um absolute.

The Fleeguard FS19856 are 7um, whereas the Baldwin's are 5um.

It would be nice if we could do one stop shopping for filters, but if you want the best ratings it's Baldwin in the OEM canister, and Donaldson on the GDP mount.

I checked the Fleetguard web site cross ref search. The site now knows that the filter number is a Mopar filter, but no crossover Fleetguard filter at this time. I think Fleetguard is making the filter for Chrysler and maybe the complete kit. They can't or won't offer the Fleetguard filter at this time.

XX-fuel makes a wonderfull fuel filtration system tucks up out of the way and filters are readily available... .

You purchased the old style kit that was discontinued because it did not meet the performance specs they wanted. Someone must have purchased the remaining stock. The original price of those kits was above $600. The new kit from Mopar for your truck is 68083853AA and sells for $365. 00.

Here is the application info from TSB 14-004-11 Rev A

Yeah I bought one when they went on discontinued price, got it for less than the current kit sells for. It has a heater and a WIF sensor (if I ever activated it) and it uses a much better 1-14" thread pattern.

Until some official specs/mfgr are published on the new kit there isn't much to go off of but marketing hype (recall the AFE 3um fuel filter... )

Ok, Thunder Road here is the differences between the old and new filter heads.

The threaded insert on the new kit is metric at a size of 16-1. 50mm on both ends. The old style filter head screws in using a thred size of 13/16-16 and the filter side of it is 1-14. Both of the filters have the same dimater outer seal.

The new kit is on the left and the old on the right. And i paid $250. 00 at a online mopar discount parts store.
