Last night after I got home, I changed the oil on my '04 2500 4x4 that has a 5 spd. manual transmission. While waiting for the oil to finish draining, I decided to take a look around with the flashlight. I noticed that on both sides of the transmission where there is a semi-rectangular steel plate held in place with a series of bolts that it appears that some transmission fluid has seeped out. The truck only has 12,400 on it, so is this considered normal, or should I have the dealer look at it? By seeping out, I mean that it appears that the exterior of the transmission on both sides has been stained by the fluid.

Thanks in advance,

Bryan

Those are the PTO covers. They are sealed in place using RTV, so if yours are leaking they might not have been completely sealed at the factory. You can remove them and apply new RTV, and that should take care of it. But you'll have to drain the transmission when you do it. If it were me, I'd check each bolt and make sure they're tight. Then, when I do my 15000 mile service, I'd change the transmission fluid and reseal the PTO covers.

I thought my truck was leaking trans fluid but it turned out it was coolant... Make sure its not your coolant. Taste it, if its really sweet its coolant and your problem is the tube going into the block heater is lose. .

One of my PTO covers was like that. It wasn't wet nor any dripping so I snugged them up a little when I drained and refilled it. I'm not worried about it.
