After looking for several months for a second generation truck, I have come up with this:

Even though New trucks are not selling, old ones are not getting cheaper. Now, either noone has told you guys you are over book price by $4000, or you don't want to really sell your truck, but you have to make it LOOK like you are to the wife!
I know you have $10,000 of toys an her, but toys do not hold new value, ok?
Let me give you two examples:
1995 2500 4x4 auto 128,000 miles. Needs windsheild, front end work(noise like a goat eating icicles when 4x4 is engaged) front bumper drilled for missing brushgaurd, fog lights, rear bumber dented and twisted, wrong class IV, ugly shims to make it work, spare gone/jack, a/c broken, several large dents, hood fenders bed side, needs paint, bed bashed in behind cab, body side molding cut to fit missing fender flares, holes for running boards, and more
$13900, will take $13500. I bet you will.
1995 reg cab dually, 60,000 miles 5spd, NICE truck, 4x4, took great care of it, no cruise or tilt. $23,500, firm.
It's seven years old!!!!! I just priced new ones, same thing, ad $5000 and go home!

Is anyone gettng their asking price out of these things???
The classifieds have old ads in them, I say no.
You guys must think like this:
The dealer offered me $18000 to trade, so I'm going to sell it for $25,000, and pay cash for my new one!
My ranting is over for now, back to my search!

Gene,

If you are serious about finding a second gen truck they are not too hard to find, currently, at a decent price, IMO. I just finished the search for a friend of mine, who ended up with a first gen, but I/we found quite a few second gens that were priced fair.

How's this for example, 1995 2500 4x4 SLT 155,000 miles, 215 injectors, gauges, and 16cm2 turbo housing (not sure why though) for $9500. It was an automatic that was replaced once at 75,000 and was tired again, but not too terribly bad. The truck looked nice and clean, but my friend held out for the first gen he was really looking for.

Gene, what exactly are you looking for and how far will you travel to pick it up, maybe I can help in your search.

Yeah,I'm still on the search for a 94-95 2wd reg cab. I wish I was in the market sooner,I would have bought gitchesums'. I presently know of three, but each one has something I don't like about it.

MGM,
Out here,there is a dealer that has a beautiful 98 3500 12valve 2wd reg cab SLT dually 5spd,lists for $18k. The best one I've seen is a 98 2500 12valve 4x4 club cab SLT 5spd for $22k.
I have found so many other nice clean trucks, but nothing 'perfect' yet.

Sorry . . I couldn't resist

In your reference you mentioned the dealer offered 18k. This means they are gonna ask 24k. We all know we get reamed when we trade. On a "friends" deal its customary to split the difference between trade and retail values.

Here in New Orleans . . not a single diesel is on the used lots. A couple make it to the auctions. There's waiting lists at all the regional dealers for the used ones. Knowing that . . why would I sell for trade value? Heck I'll be patient ask retail and be positioned to take less if needed.

When I was looking . . I started with the used's ones. A 2-3 year old with about 40k miles went for 23-26 depending on the model, when you had a inside contact. The dealers down here won't budge on the price of the used ones . . you had more flexability with new.

I wasn't about to pay 25ish for something without a warrenty . . so I stepped down and bought a ST with cruise, tilt, 5sp, ac, cassette, trailer & camper group . . for 26,900 bottom line deal after TT&L. I was lucky to find one I wanted that had the 1000 rebate for the y2k's. Almost a year old, with 18k miles and my equipment . . blue book retail is $26,230.

I for one am happy they hold their value. #ad
Good luck on finding a sucker who needs to dump one quick. #ad

Whatever MGM offers to pay, I'll up the ante by $500-1000, #ad
I need a 12 valve(prefer 95-98) to keep my 17 year old son happy, he's putting too many miles on my 2001 dually.
Don't feel bad, MGM would do the same thing to me ! #ad

I don't have a problem paying retail for a good truck. It is the above retail that makes me laugh. Or someone wanting retail for a WRECK.

Try to find company's that use Ram's for work trucks. They will have high miles, but lots of history and maintainance.
Usually they will be priced to sell.
I found one for less than $7500 and all it has ever done is carry a 1200# tank, it has NEVER towed anything.

1995 2500, auto, 3. 54, 200,000 miles!

I was trying to get a rise out of MGM with that post, saying I'd beat his price, but he didn't take the bait. That little trip to Arizona must have sapped his sense of humor. .
Seriously, I'd like to find a good used one for my son, but I believe it'll be closer to this fall or next winter before the two of us can earn enough $$$$ to consider it. So, MGM still has dibs on the first good deal to come along...

Even though New trucks are not selling, old ones are not getting cheaper

Gene,
Thats how it works! When new cars aren't selling... Used car prices are higher.

Like you, I searched for a solid year, and ended up buy new. To sum up what I found in that year... . The best deal I came across was a 97' (one year old) with 10K miles and loads of scratches for $4,000 less than a new one. Needless to say I bought new. Interestingly enough, the truck was gone in no time. So someone came up with the cash.
Because the dealer wouldn't budge more than $1K. .

Supply and Demand I guess.

You guys are on the wrong side of the world! I've tried to sell my '96 3500 Ext cab 4x4 AT Dually SLT several times with no luck. It has TST plate, 4" exhaust, no kitty, K&N Filter, A Pillar gages, Dunrite convertor with VB hop ups, 60k mi. No dents, dings, scratches etc except inside bed. I thought $22k was a reasonable start point for something that has all the basic options.

I bought my cherry '96 w/100k miles on it from a dealer for $13,500. I spotted it on AutoTrader. It was listed at $18,500. I ran the vin, came up clean, and made a run at them. It took a little time, but was worth it. Check the dealer lots. Mine was a post-100K warranty trade on a new Cummins. They ARE out there! #ad

A while back I posted one that was on a lot in Texas City. 1995 5speed reg cab 89k miles very clean inside for $9500. Not ONE person responded. It took the guy two months to sell it, and he got $8500 for it. Go figure.

Jim,
I remember you saying that one sold for $8500 bucks. I must have been asleep when you first posted it was available.
The first one I found was '94 for $8900 bucks, but some girl was buying it right when I got there. Then the dealer repo'd it within two days and called me to come buy it. Then when I went back, the same girl bought it again. Aggrivating? Yes! I'm still hoping that dealer calls me back. #ad

I found a beautiful '95 2wd 5spd with 96k out in some boone town. I looked at it and drove it and the VIN is clean... they're asking $13k. We're leaving for vacation for 1 1/2 weeks, but if it's there when we get back the wife is gonna buy it.

Do you guys reckon (if ya reckon at all) I'll have any problems selling mine (see signature) when the time is right? Maybe like in a little over a year from now.

It's a real creme puff (that means its like new). Runs great (21 mpg @ 70 mph, no load), absolutely scratchless, everything untouched except for the silencer ring and the stealth high beam/fog circuit, 19,000 miles (now). When its cleaned up, it looks like a truck does sitting on the lot, I haven't done a thing to it, curb appeal wise.

Since everybody else listed their toys, I will too.

My dad just sold his '96 4WD, CC, SWB, Auto w/60k miles for $19K in Vancouver, WA. Oh, yeah - it was a 5. 9 V8. Our trucks hold their value well.
