Who's been checked for offroad fuel?

Rotating Tires - how often?

With the outrageous price of fuel now I am very seriously thinking about getting a tank and running off road fuel. The last tank of green I bought cost me 1. 60/gal. Almost thirty cents more than reg. unleaded. When they filled my tank for the oil furnace, 1. 07/gal. Wheres the justification in this B. S. ? I have never had my tanks checked in all the years of driving over the road. I dont haul commercially with my Ram, any other PA guys ever been checked? Dont post whether you run Red fuel or not. (the screws might year ya):p Reply in the Poll if you want to .

suggest slight modification to poll

Don't Run Red and been checked

Don't Run Red and not checked

Run Red abd been checked

Run Red and not been checked

on the poll it's either / or can't vote with both so you have to choose which way to go and only part answered you question

Run Red

IF I would have run red from 1996 my first truck to now how much would I have saved. :D

I have never been stopped and checked. I was told the fine is $1,000 in Pa (((But I don't know)))

Cliff

Chris,

I know quite a few people that have been checked. That was back when I was with a contracting company that has lots of heavy equipment and on site off road tanks. One guy didn't have enough diesel in his tank so he put in 5 gallons of red to make it to the shop. As luck would have it he was checked and got nailed with the fine. I can't remember how much it was but it was in the thousands. I personally haven't been checked but I didn't drive a diesel back then either. It still seems like a bad idea.

Thomas

I agree the poll isn't set up right. There is the option to allow multiple choices but the poll starter must be the only one who can do it, moderator can't change it. I can change the choices if Hummin wants though.

You won't catch me running red. Besides being illegal with stiff fines (although I've never heard of anyone around here being checked), that is taxes that goes towards fixing and building roads. So if you run red, don't complain about rough, poorly maintained roads. JMO.

red fuel

i researched the ohio revised code. the fine here is $1000 or $10 per gallon of capacity of the fuel tank which ever is more.

i would like to hear more from those who have actually been checked.

RED

Come on Kid, The Big Rigs are the ones that screw up the roads by being over weight and all and they get a break on fuel costs. I never saw a pickup put those ruts in a highway like a big rig does.

How do the big trucks get a break? Only off road equipment can use red diesel.

If the big trucks were'nt around and only pick-ups and cars were on the road, would the road stay perfect. No, everything causes wear. I'm not trying to argue, but the taxes are for the road maintaince. Now whether it's used properly is a different discussion.

It's called a 3 axle permit. Sure there would be some "normal" wear but the increased weight is a big factor. Like i said pickups don't make those ruts in the roads.

Jim

It is of course illegal. I would venture to say that more diesel is used on public roads by non commercial vehicles than commercial vehicles but who knows. Regardless, we are talking about not paying taxes to maintain and improve roads. Those who do not pay road taxes assessed through the sale of fuel (diesel) should not expect the rest of us to pay for them. For those of you participating in this illegal conduct all I can say is that rationalization is the key to mental health.

Have you ever noticed how many RIGS run our roads. Literally thousands per day at maybe 8mpg well you do the math on fuel consumption. And they run 24-7.

Jim

Red #2 was advertised here @ 1. 00 and I paid 1. 47 including the . 06 ripoff.

I may be paying for it, but I'm sure not getting . 47 worth of road repairs & maintenance. The ba$tards were out plowing before 9am on Christmas day (triple pay) and took till Sunday noon this weekend to get rid of Friday's snow.

Road taxes

Before I get into the road tax situation in the states as it refers to trucks (real trucks, eighteen wheels). Red dyed fuel was put out there to give the railroads, farmers, and constrution a tax break. I don't burn it for the reason of hating red dye, if you have ever worked with dye injection system, you would know what I mean. I don't want any in my truck. Red dye is mostly xylene and can be very nasty, a little goes a long, long, long, long, way!

The majority of road taxes are paid by trucks, they get NO break on fuel costs. The only break you see is in some states that have slight break at pump because trucker has already paid taxes through buying a fuel permit. Fuel permits, road tax permits, insurance, fuel costs, equipment inspections, tires, and other costs pretty much hold any profit a owner/operater have. The taxes you see at the pump are high because of states trying to build revenue for cost of big city road projects, instead of mass transit. Truckers pay more than their fair share. If they were to disapear so would 98% of all the goods you see on the shelf at your local stores!

:--)

i was stuck doing a standard inspection on a low hp locomotive yesterday, which involves fuel filter change outs. that fuel in the filters was blue like a smurf [at least that is what cn has, and it doesn't smell like normal road diesel fuel - someone once told me that they scent it [like propane/nat. gas] to know that it is their fuel, don't know though]

Only people I know that have ever been stopped and checked in PA or NY are ones with in bed fuel tanks with an external fuel pumping capability.

I guess they figure if you have 100 gallons of off road fuel on board and you normally fuel off road vehicles the temptation for you is to great and they check.

Red fuel

There is no way I would run red fuel in a highway vehicle! And I have Red in storage out back! jps

Bill

Go ahead and change the poll:) I'm one of those guys that cant type what they're thinking but can think what they're typing.

Hope I didnt start a war here, I was just trying to see if anyone knew what the fine was. Or if they have ever been checked. Anyone drive Interstate 80 through central PA knows that the fuel tax is going somewhere and it isn't roads:rolleyes: I pay taxes to my township and the township roads are real good.

In my area the Amish buggys do as much damage to the roads as the big rigs do but they dont tax horse feed. I just feel, if I'm making money with my diesel, then tax me. If I just drive it back and forth to work and haul my little camper then why tax my fuel effecient diesel when I could be driving a gas sucking V-10.

Not trying to show my idoicy, just trying to make sense of all this:D
