I am desperate for a good local diesel 24V repair shop (other than the 'deealership'), in the Sacramento, CA. , area. My 'Swift Auto World' dealer wants over $4K to replace my 'High Pressure Injection Pump, (it will only start when cold, when hot, it takes forever to start) because, they say, of the 'mods' I've made; (to make my truck run as it should have from the stinking factory. )

So, my "awesome black hole which I throw money in" presently sits in my driveway while I drive my daughter's '88 Bronco II for work. (It starts every time, BTW)

I've spent a total of $580 in just towing bills alone for this truck and I'm tired of it! (Not to mention the four lift pumps, one starter, and one transmission failure I've paid for out of pocket:

(I know, I'm my own stinking 'warranty station')

But really, is there an independant 'honest' diesel mechanic to be found is the Sacto area?

The last time my truck broke down I had to pay $420 to have it towed three hours to Redding, CA. (to 'J & H Performance Diesel')for a 'DTT' transmission re-build, which was the only repair shop I felt comfortable with, and that was open before a vacation I was going on!

I'd now rather have my truck just sit in my driveway indefinitely since my employer makes my payment anyway!

Sorry for being depressed:(

Sorry bout your run of luck. I would try to find a bosch shop. It will be in the yellow pages. Thats what I did here. The bosch shop locally is unfrigginbelievable. The guy has all the toys. Everything you need to build a 600hp 12 or 24v. He is even building a drag truck. Awesome. Anyways. Try the bosch shops. You will be suprised. I got a good price on my pump. They will usually install them there for about 360 dollars. Thats book time at least. A moron can do it in two hours but whos counting. Maybe 2100 bucks altogether. The guy here sells brand new pumps for 1850. No shipping so its not a bad deal. Wish I woulda bought a spare when they were 1200 bucks.

Where is all the shade tree TDR members that live in the Sacramento, CA. , area? Sounds like a wrench day needs to happen when RobbyRam gets a new pump. Help a brother out! Since he is BOMBed, may as well get the modified reman from Piers (I think that is who has them).

Someone recently posted a source of rebuilt pumps for $750. 00. That's about the cost of some 4bbl carburators in CA.

Should I go back to a 'Gasser?

Thats what I did when my warranty was almost up and had 41/2

lousy years of payments and non service. I went 223 miles one way to have a "good Bosch" shop work on it twice. They did good.

Try asking around or call Cummins or try their web site.

Sacramento Area

I'm prolly just as far away as those JH boys.

Cummins West would be a very competant repair location. Other then that you should go over to talk to Ken Imler and see if he has any experience in this area.

I have heard of a couple reasons for a hard start condition when hot. One would be excessive fuel pressure from a aftermarket lift pump. I have to leave my lift pump off when starting my truck, then switch it on once the engine is running. The other problem is a timing problem within the pump. Starts OK when cold but not once it's hot. I've heard of guys dousing the pump with water to get the engine started. A pump replacement would be in order.

I third the mention of Ken Imler. There is also Dean Rue (I think??) at Orangevale Diesel - don't have his number on hand to post...

Also, TDR member Jake Scharosch "DRAG DIESEL" can help you out as well, he's in the Sac area.

NO pun intended but I went over to Imler with a problem on my truck and he didn't have a clue. Turned out to be my VP popped. Getting a new one this week. Ken was blaming my tires since they are big and my little Hy35 as having turbo lag. No comment.

Should you go back to a gasser?!?

A very bad day with your truck is still way better than any gasser in my opinion. Good Luck in the future!!

So after talking with you about my truck problem, I called Cummins West in SAC. They are very reluctant to help on Dodge Trucks and tried to intimidate me with labor costs to keep me from bringing it into them. They told me to go to the dealer. He was rude on the phone too and made me feel like "why are you calling us".

Another bad experience here too. I went in to get a fuel filter and he had to pop the lid on my filter canister to make sure he gave me the correct one. I asked him to just throw in the new one since he has to pull the lid. Turns out he had the wrong one on the first attempt and got the right filter and swapped it out. Went to pay for the new filter and the guy charged me $10 to install the new filter. I thought this was ridiculous since he had to pop my canister anyway to make sure it was the right filter. I know this is a petty experience but it made me feel uncomfortable. I got the feeling they acting jerky because I installed all the mods on my truck myself and didn't buy any expensive parts from them. Ie... turbo, comp, injectors etc... guess that is just business.

I'd bet that there's a lot of people here who would be happy to have a bunch of pumps put in at their cost if their employer paid their truck payments for them.

Cummins West In Sac.

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences KBond. Maybe CW in Sac isn't a friendly place for us Rammers.

I heard a unpleasant story about Dean Rue as well. You never know what to believe though. A buddy with a 12v had a gear case gasket replaced and some problems developed afterwards.

RobbyRam, would you be interested in having Cummins West look at your truck? I know those folks and I'd interceed for you. If necessary I'll trailor it down to them.

Just got a quote from CW on the pump exchange. The labor is @ $118 per hour, thats stiff no doubt, but money well spent. The pump is $1400. Total is $2300, a far cry from the $4000.

I almost called you back to see if you could get me in @ Cummins West with your pull but figured I'd exhaust all other ave's first. Suppose to get a new VP44 from the dealer beginning of next week. Now if that doesn't fix my probs. , I'll definately be calling you for your input again.

Hey Robby Ram, give me a call, i just found your thread... . I'll get you all fixed up. No one should pay $4,000 for a stupid injection pump and instalation.
