steering woes

I stopped to top off my tank today at a Love's truckstop today. As I pulled up to the pump, I noticed that there were two maxipads on one side of the pump and a boy in a third generation Cummins in front of me fueling up. Well it looked like the boy in the Cummins and the guy in the maxipad were having a conversation. I got out of my truck to join in while I was waiting for one of the pumps to become available. The guy in the maxipad was talking from the driver's side window of his truck. As I got out of the truck, I heard the guy in the Duramax being really nasty to the Cummins boy... I'm tellin' ya he was being down right mean! Well I decided to stir the pot a little bit. The guy in the Cummins was just trying to get his fuel and get out of there. So I interrupted the maxipad guy and asked him if he had jumper cables in his truck. He looked at me and asked "for what?" in a real mean tone. I told him it would be a real time saver when his truck wouldn't start. Oh man that did it. He then started to tell the Cummins boy something about a Cummins not being able to pull a waste product out of a turkey's hind quarters. His version was a little more harsh. He then started telling the Cummins guy his maxipad would run off and leave that piece of crap (not his word) Cummins. The Cummins guy said his truck seemed to be pretty quick. Mr. maxipad asked him if he had anything under the hood and the Cummins guy said no that it was a new stock truck. I saw that Mr. Maxipad had an Australian Shepard in the truck with him... . a good looking animal mind you... so I again interrupted him and told him I would give him $5 for his dog. The way I said it was the real kicker. Well he just moved his truck and went inside to pay. I then asked what the Cummins guy what had precipitated this conversation and he said he had no idea. I told him that that Mr. maxipads girl or more likely his guy didn't give him any the night before so he was probably just cranky. A nice fella in an older powerpuke joined in the conversation and said he was probably mad because he had paid $50,000 for a $30,000 truck. Oh well... ;) I chatted with the Cummins guy and told him about the TDR and that there was a dyno run on Saturday near by and he left shortly thereafter. I finished filling up, moved my truck and then went inside to pay. I was talking about Mr. maxipad to the clerk and the clerk said he had come into pay and had been a real jerk. Oh well. Sometime while I was putting fuel in mine I heard some tires squeal (more like a quick bark) and turned to see Mr. maxipad in all his glory given that maxipad all it had which of course wasn't very much. I felt bad for the Cummins guy but know he will be happy with his truck. :)

I have talked to a host of Maxipad owners at fuel pumps from time to time and found the majority are good people - however there is always that jerk out there that can't be nice to anyone. My responce to them is simple "it must be h@!! being you":D :D

I had the same thing happen to me in a parking lot about 5 years ago, but the jerk was a DODGE owner! He had a really nice looking lifted 4X4 with 37" tires from a Hummer. I wanted to ask him if he knew about the TDR. I told him he had a nice truck and said "That's mine over there. " Over the years I've forgotten what all he said, but I remember he was a real smart-azz. He made a few snide remarks about my truck and then he peeled out of the parking lot in an effort to impress me.

Whatever!

Of all the Dodge/Cummins owners I've talked to over the years, he was the only one that treated me like that.

I say the proof is in the pudding. I'd run em and make him put his money where his mouth is!! :D And if he wanted more of a beatin we'd both hook up to 25k lbs and run 10k miles and see who faired better.

I find myself to get the best satisfaction with bad mouthing my own truck, telling the other driver of the "better" truck, (weather it be a duradud or a cute little stroker) how I would love to be sitting in his seat, but since I can only afford this heap, or since this is the only thing I could find, or whatever reason comes to mind. Then what normally conspires is him wanting to measure his Di%$ with mine on the road after I fininsh filling my tank. Then, I wheel it out in the road or onto the interstate, and let that Cummins Hum, and blow some smoke all over him, and sometimes I let them catch me down the road about 10 miles, but most of the time I just let them go, and keep that satisfaction in the back of my head that I have a nice truck, and what I think is the best diesel on the road, considering, maintainance, durability, and performance. I guess some day their arrogance will be reduced, when they have to walk for a week because their stroker took a dump on them, or their duradud took a puke. But thats ok fellas, we have the satisfaciton of that CUMMINS name being on the side of our trucks and under our hoods.

Just ask them what they drive... they are sure to respond "A Ford Powerstroke!" of "A Chevy Duramax. "

Personally, I drive a Cummins... not just a Dodge, not a Dodge w/ a Cummins, I DRIVE A CUMMINS. The thing just happens to be wrapped in and bolted to a Dodge! :D

Not that I mind the Dodge too much, cause I like a lot of the things about the pickup itself, but when I bought mine, I bought an engine with the intent to make it into a fire-breathing, smoke emitting machine, and sure as I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER, that's what I now have. Of course the work is never over, and it's just gonna start getting more and more costly to get those last few ponies out of her... that's ok though, just means I get to work on her more.

I just go the same speed up the hill as I do on the flats or downhill. Cept sometimes that little demon on my left shoulder gets the better of me and my GPS records a tripple digit tattletale. Sometimes I'm so far out in front up the hill I forget about them. All at once here they come whizzing by me on the downhill side. He!! I think to myself, what can't go fast towing downhill? Some of those kids with the new tractors take it real serious, drive like crazy to catch me. My wifey taught me long time ago, let um save face. After all I've proved my point. . . and it just ain't all that important. But love going everywhere up or down the same speed. Makes is easy for me to calculate when I'll be where.

Cheers,

Steve J.

Well, you all know what happened, he just got smoked by a Cummins and he found a young guy he thought he could intimidate to make himself feel better. Probably went home, kicked the dog and punched his wife in the mouth on the way to the toilet where no one could see him pout about getting smoked by a Cummins that started all this in the first place!

Candidate for anger-management here

Had a very similar thing happen to me a couple years back. I did nothing to this dude, said nothing or anything. I was waiting on him at one of those single pumps that you can park on each side but has only one pump. I started fueling mine and after he came back from paying and jumped in his driver seat with the window down, all I heard was, that's a loud a$$ piece of xxxx, Dodge junk this, Cummins slow that. I was not in a 'good' mood to start with and here this guy comes crossing the wrong path.

Well I withstood it for a minute or two, then I popped. I pulled the pump out of my tank, walked to his driver's window, laid the nozzle on his arm with the opening pointed in like a gun and said, "SHUT YOUR MOUTH OR I SQUEEZE!" And I would've d@mn shore done it too. He dropped it in drive and eased away. My adrenalin's rushing now just thinking about it. Maybe I really do need some anger management? I'm the nicest guy (at least I think I am), and I can take some cr@p ... but at some point a switch gets flipped and Dr Evil takes over.

Otherwise, I make it a point to compliment someone else's truck regardless if I'd own it or not. Most PSD's and DMax's are good trucks, but I prefer the Cummins (for many many reasons) and its as simple as that.

Similar brand war, but not at the pump.

I am working at a house building a deck. I have my truck (see sig) and my boss has a 94 12 Valve.

Anyway, the neighbor directly across the road has nothing but Chevy. His carport above where he parks his newer 2500 "HD" says "Chevrolet Drive. " Even my coworker who prefers Chevys laughed at that.

Anyway, I was leaving one day for lunch, he was outside and heard my straight piped Ram leaving. I didn't take off too fast, but I love to hear her sing. As I came back he was doing something and a few minutes later I started to go back to work. Then I hear him tearing down the gravel road in his Chevy.

As far as the pump goes, if a Ford is filling and they want to talk I will talk and be nice but if it's a Chevy I won't pretend like I want to talk. No thanks!

I did see one guy bragging up his new (in 2001) Chevy Dmax at the local Ace store. Saying how powerful it is and how quiet it is and this and that. I only had my 86 6. 9L Ford so I didn't bother but when I bomb my Cummins and I find him again... :)

The Ford and chevy guys around here are pretty respectful. For those who aren't I have some favorite comments:

"Do you think your truck will look and run like mine at 250,000 miles?"

Open your CTD hood and exclaim, "Hey Look, I can see my engine! and I know what everything is!"

For the maxipads, "my thats a nice looking frame does dragging it through the snow keep it clean?"

"What operating system does your truck run"

My favorite is to listen to some Dumb F__k who is telling me about his programmer, or his chip, or his fueling box, or whatever and then when I ask them what kind of gauge setup they are running I get a dumb look. At this point I either enlighten them or laugh at them and walk away.

For really obnoxious people I tell them I had a brand new whatever they are driving and traded it back to the dealer to get my old truck back. ;) Follow it up with a sympathetic, "but I'm sure they got all of those problems fixed", right before making a quick exit.
