I have a 2004. 5 stock turbo, trying to remove the silencer ring which is claimed to be sooo easy. Well I don't see how you can pull it out because it is a snap ring (without plier holes) and it DOES sit in a groove. So what the heck!!! I tried everything to get it out. No luck. What's the trick? Is it really that worth it? Everyone tells me how much better you will hear the turbo whine.

first, is it worth it? entirely up to you. doesn't add any power by most people's accounts.

if you like the whine, then it helps removing it.

as far as getting the snap ring out, there is a slight taper at the ends of the ring. if you use a smaller flat blade screwdriver (1/4"), wedge it into the edge of the ring and then twist the screwdriver till the ring starts to lift up. once you have it lifted up enough, take a very small screwdriver (like 1/8" blade) and put it between the snap ring and the slot. once you get the small screwdriver under the ring, you should be able to keep working it while pulling "out" on the larger screwdriver, until you get about half of the ring out. after that, you can just pull on it with your hand while working the small screwdriver behind the ring.

this is what worked for me.

good luck!

I have the same problem. Have tried to get the snap ring out several times only to get frustrated. I am concerned about getting too aggressive and damaging something. I've been able to work screw drivers behind the ring, but never with a good enough grip to move it.

Never had any problem removing the ring on my old 98. 5, but no luck at all with the 07.

not that much. it's probably one of those things where you are hoping it is louder, so therefore it sounds louder.

quite honestly, in hindsite, i think it is a mistake to remove the silencer, because it helps funnel the air into the center of the turbo.

i would guess that there may be increased turbulence around the "entry point" since the casting is hollow behind that ring.

now that i have a Super B turbo, i don't even think of modifying any part of the turbo.

have had it on for over 3 trouble free years and it's natural sound is very pleasing.

Ive got an 03 and had a small problem for about ten minutes then got my smallest flathead screwdriver I could find then ground it down to about 1/16' and used it to get in the groove and just snap it out. It pops right out once you do that and the truck sounds so much better. If you like the sound of 30 pounds of boost then remove it because it sounds sick.

I got mine out with a small flat blade screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers. Once I got the blade of the screwdriver under the tapered end of the snap ring, I grabbed the end of the snap ring with the needle nose pliers and it came right out. As for airflow/performance concerning the removal of the baffle ring, there should be no difference in performance or airflow with the baffle ring removed. It is strictly there to dampen the turbo noise. I remember this being discussed on this site back when I first got my 1998. 5 24-valve and that was what folks posted who got it straight from Holset/Cummins.

I used a small blade screw-stick and needle nose pliers. Between the silencer MIA and the Cool Blue Hose, she sings like a bad dog! I love that sound.

i used the bottle opener on my leatherman and it worked perfect... just find the gap put it in there and get under the ring on top and go down and out with it... worked good for me

what I do when I can't get the snap ring with a screw driver is to use a flat ended punch and carefully beat the ring in and then the you can use a pair of plier to pull bent in ring out and the snap ring comes out much easier.

its just pressure fit against the turbo wall. just need to work it out towards you. no grove or nothing. not to bad when you figure that out, i sat there for an hour trying to get it "out of a groove that was not there"

Thanks for the replies I think I'll try all of your ideas and hopefully it'll come out. Anyone have a sound clip with it removed on a 3rd gen truck? Oo.

it dosen't get more exact than this. have patience young Jedi. it will come out. and if it doesn't, it is not worth ruining a turbo to get a LITTLE more whistle. there is more, but not that much.

a trouble lamp and small mirror may also assist you as well, sometimes the split ring is split on the top side of the housing.

I had the same problem when I first got my truck. . I took a pair of vice grips and gripped the actual silencer ring and just bent the ring until it came out. . It was alot easier and helped vent the anger that the clip caused me haha

I would add a note of caution here. I recently had the snap ring break and it and the silencer ring were against the turbo wheel. We all know where all the small particles went. It appears so far that no damage was done to the engine but I still have anxious moments every time I go to check oil. I may be dead wrong but I feel that the snap ring may have been compromised when removing and installing. It did cost me a new turbo so far. I actually prefer the sound with it back in as there is lots of whine and at higher boosts it sounds better.
