On the subject of turbos... What is "turbo bark?" Does it it actually sound like a bark? What causes it and is it detrimental to the turbo/ engine?

sticking a screwdriver in the end and walking it around should work to remove your retainer ring. Just make sure you don't jam the impeller when you slip off. The bark sounds like a sudden full boost to no throttle situation, not harmful at all from what I hear. Ever heard a mod diesel tractor in a tractor pull when he lets off after getting stuck? Thats a bark if I ever heard one.

Generally speaking it is no a good Idea to bark turbos. Atleast certain models. If your turbo has a right handed thread on the Compressor wheel nut it can loosen and spin right off. Also when the Bark or surge is occuring it can stress the shaft and blades on the wheels.

Some models of turbos handle barking and surging without any problems.

I finally managed to get the silencer ring out of my turbo. I sharpened a small flat blade screw driver on my grinder and then was able to work it under the retainer ring to remove it. Anyway, pulled the boat out of the water for the first time without the silencer ring last weekend: steep boat ramp, heavy boat (5500#), both windows down. WOW :D: , when the truck hit 2000rpm in 2nd, the turbo wasn't whining it was screaming!! The kids sitting in the bed of the truck though something was going to fly apart under the hood. I must admit, it scared me for a moment until I realized where the noise was coming from.

it screams like a bashee:D  put a afe drop in filter and it will scream even more. drill some holes in the box even more. i think my wife even like how it sounds. one of her freinds was ridding with us in my truck and she says what is that loud whistle sound. without hesitation my wife says that is the turbo:cool: GOOD JOB HONEY. of course when anyone gets in my truck and with a six speed i can make this thing scream with having to drive like a maniac. pull those rings out and scream on.

side note, those new 6l furds turbo scream. let me clarify before you guys think i am asvicating a 6l i think this 6l will be the equiv. of another chevy 6. 5l:-laf #@$%!

I was going to pull mine out tonight before I read this post. Is it really that loud? I like the whine when I'm getting on the gas as much as the next guy, but if it's going to "scream like a banshee" cruising down the road at 2000RPM, I'm not so sure.

Especially since it doesn't look like you can put it back in once you take that ring out... ?

So, does it whine real loud only when accelerating?

or

Does it scream like a banshee while cruising down the road?

Thanks guys.

out of all the people on this board i have only seen one post where they put it back in.

at cruising speed it doesnt scream... . you will however look like this when you pass an 18 wheeler and the sound coming out of the tubo reflecting off the truck will make you :)

cruising it quiet but just loud enough trust me duck you sold me on the level kit and 315's now i will sell you on this, try it.

Duck, I agree with CATCRACKER, I just removed it and went for a short ride (unloaded) and I was all :D :D :D . I found using a scratch-awe worked with little effort, I even reinstalled it to see how hard it would be. It was easier to do than removing it was. Of course I immediately removed it again :D.

I removed my ring after I got my truck:eek:

then a few weeks ago while at Muncie,I installed an AFE filter:--) . At highway speeds it's obnoxious to the ears, hammer the throttle and aaahhh, can't think of a word that describes it. . close the windows and it sounds like the turbo is going to suck your pasenger through the dash vents. . thats all without a load...

Took mine out tonight. Some observations for those of you kicking it around:

When I took my honeycomb "X" baffle out, it made the whine a little louder. I'd say taking the silencer ring out is about double the effect of removing the X baffle.

Came out real easy with a sharp screwdriver. Took all of about 5 minutes to do from start to finish. Looks like it goes back in real easy if you needed to un-do the mod for a service visit or whatever.

It might be my imagination, but it seems like it spools up slower. Louder yes, but slower. Like it takes too long for the power to kick in? It might just be that the seat of my pants needs to catch up with my ears. When the turbo gets to a certain volume, I'm expecting the power to come on. Now that the whine comes in earlier, I'm left with a flat feeling.

Anyone else notice this? Is it my imagination or is it really coming on slower?

Didn't have time for a highway test, but will do tomorrow.

I removed my ring a long time ago and have been running an AFE for a few months. The other day a buddy of mine that used to be in the AirForce and I were crusing down the interstate and he said "this reminds me of flying in a C-5 Galaxy" (cargo aircraft).

And come to think of it he is right.

:)

I have tried several times to remove the ring. First of all, how do you see the ends of the ring to work on them. My ends are at the top of the compressor. I can't see in there to work on them. I have tried blindly to grasp them but can't seem to get a hold of the ends. Any ideas?

cpizz,

mine where in the same area it takes some work.

duck,

get a drop in afe and it will help your turbo spool a little quicker sop says i gained a little hp

You might be able to take a punch and tap one end of the ring and move the ring around where you have better access. That's what I did to mine but now I think I got it in a worse position and I just have not found the right something to move it where I can get to it better. I have took them out on all the trucks I have an sons 99 and this is the hardest one I have come up on yet. I guess its because they lowered the turbo down. Since I put me a AFE filter and took out the x-baffle I can hear it more now. But I will get that silencer ring out yet:D
