Does anyone know if these turbos on the 6. 7's have the same old silencer ring snapped in like the old trucks do that give you a better turbo whine if you remove it? I thought I would check here first before taking a look, looks like its not quite as easy getting into the turbo as my 01.

Hi Marksp:

How do you like the S&B filter? Did you buy the entire CAI kit or just the filter? I assume you removed the silencer when you were installing the new filter/kit.

Thanks,

Brad

hi guys... just curious i popped everything off from the turbo side of the intake. . it seems as the silencer ring is pressed on... what is the best way to remove? also what tools did you use to get it out thanks so much garett

It is pressed in lightly and is held in place by three metal dowels at the 12, 4 and 8 o'clock positions on the front of the turbo. They need to be removed before the silencer can be pulled out. Might require either a good tug or some heat applied to the turbo housing to get it free.

Ah no snap ring in there this time eh? "I good tug" :)

Sky,

I will be interested to hear how your ring-removal goes,... any difficulty, tools used, time-taken, and results(sound difference).

I understand that there is no warranty effect from this "modification", and am considering doing the same thing to my rig.

(I'd like more of the turbo sound, so long as the increase isn't so great as to interfere with music-listening pleasure with the windows up ;)

Thanks for any reports,... and good luck!

well heres the silencer ring got it out... yey :)

is it me or did taking out the silencer ring on the 6. 7l with a cold air intake make it sound pretty unique. . its not your typical turbo wine. . its more like a supercharger / big truck wine... am i explaining that right? or possibly i messed something up wen i took off the ring? thanks garett

no it wasnt necessary to chizel it out like i did lol. . i just didnt know what the actual ring looked like so i tried pullen the edges and it was breaking off. but best way to get it is a long prybar...

Nope sounds like its right. Do you like it? It must sound louder with a quite engine. Is it too loud for your or do you like it?

heres the thing im a 20 year old kid. . new jersey and new york is all about imports and loud cars. . so in my opinion i love the sound. . now if i put my father in the passenger seat he would probably tell me the sound of the turbo is annoying. . this is my third dodge so far i had a 03 dodge with cummins, 04 ford f-350 powerjoke, and an 05 dodge cummins, now i got the 6. 7l and by far i love this turbo sound the best... i think like u said since the motor and exhaust is so quiet on these trucks i think the turbo just screams because of that. . im curious to hear other peoples opinions. thanks garett

My wife said in my 01 when I first did it "its ear piercing" to hear the whistle. I was like I like it its my truck and its cool. She got use to it and never said anything again about it. I love the sound as well and will try to get to it today. So you think just pry it up where its spot welded on? In the 01 it was just a little piece of metal snapped in with a ring this looks like a bit more work and a lot more beefy looking.

I have my truck apart here and looking at your pictures and I thought just the ring was the outer part there. But it looks like you cant really get that outer part off with out some real work somehow. How many places is it held on there? The turbo fins look like they are right there over top of that and would hate to bend them things...

Yes please, I took most of my intake off. Where exactly is the ring located, intake side I assume? we all know what assume means. How muck trouble is it to get out? Most people have more mechanical in the little finger than I have altogether.

Yes its in the intake side after you remove the air tube from air box to turbo... . It looks kinda like a plate with a whole in it then in a little deeper you will see the finned wheel.....

On another note here i just looked at mine and would like to know how the HECK you get that darn thing out???? Anyone have an easy way of doing it?

Also after looking at it and the way its designed, it looks as if it funnels the air and kinda guides it to the center of the compressor wheel... . Now by removing all that is it gonna have any kind of effect on how it performs???

I found an easy and quick way of removing the intake tube with the other tube on it..... Now just need to figure out how to get the ring out easily... ... Any one with suggestions i would appreciate it LOTS... . THANKS

Well it wont effect the performance at all, its just to funnel the air so its quiet. The problem is its pressed in now instead of just clipped in. I still have my old ring from my 01. The ring its self is the outer part, if a guy could just cut those 3 spots some how it would be fine. Or I guess you could take the whole thing out like the pictures above but i am not sure what is the best way to do that.
