My 05 dually flat bed hauls a 4K truck camper 90 % of its life.

I know lots of the expo rigs convert to singles like a 19.5 Rickson or similar.

What all would I need to change to give it a wide stance? New rear axle? I've heard spacers are not a good idea.

We did some trail driving yesterday and got a large rock stuck between the passenger duallies.

Fortunately we spotted it, and ended up jacking it up, lessening the wheel and removing it that way. we started to try a tow strap, but it just felt too tight, and that tire damage would be a real possibility.

Aside from this hassle, which we aren't likely to deal with often, I am also thinking it would do a lot better in the snow with singles.

What other pros and cons should we be thinking about in swapping out to singles.

Thanks,

Dave

I might be way off base but I think duelly axles are wider than SRW axles. I believe that because the inside wheel has to clear the bed on a truck with a standard bed. If I'm correct, wouldn't a wheel with zero offset (or a couple inches maybe) give you what you are looking for?

Thanks. I don't know enough about wheel spacing to say. I've heard the front has a spacer that comes off easily, and obviously it is critical that all four wheels are the same for a matching spare.

Have you tried removing a front tire to check on the spacer and done any measurements to see if the front axle and the rear are the same?

to my knowledge....
Rickson has a wheel with just the right backspacing, FA inside-out, RA outside-in to get the same track wide FA. and RA.

but you need to know about the downsides of the 19.5 Tires to, as long as you stay on good pavement they do great, but on backroads, potholes or worse they are incredibly harsh, beating the truck to death virtually.

I had them myself, spent thousands for it, and now I'm back to the 17" because no one told me before.

I have Khumo 19.5 all terrain on my Ricksons (dually though not single) I think I put them on in 2004 or 2005? Still have over 50% tread on them, side walls are starting to crack on a few now though. The 01 they are on doesnt go on long trips anymore so they will still work for now. They were about $325 a tire back then but have been worth every penny.

Anyone know about a 17" rim that has the back spacing like the Rickson's Ozy mentioned?

AEV makes something in a 17", rated around 4200 each, but it doesn't fit pre 2010. What's different about post 2010, that the 8 lug, 17" rims wont fit?
