Last AAA call of the night... 57' Bel Air Drop Top. Stuck in a Showmars parking lot because the starter wiggled out of the bell housing. I had to hold back my smart mouth comments about Chevys while this older gentleman was running his telling me how he thinks I should do my job.

He wanted to push it out the space with my truck blocking a one way entrance into the shopping center behind the restaurant. And down the hill of the parking lot onto the bed of my Hino. His reasoning was that it would be fine since the restaurant was closing and easier using the hill to move it.

"No sir, we're going to load this my way"

Hino positioned and extended off the right side of the picture using all the space in the now empty Showmars parking lot without being disturbed. Snatch block in my rear right bed corner and full left lock on the steering wheel. Pulled it in till the angle was too sharp, locked the wheel the other way and rolled it out. Lock to the left again to pull it out into the open. Disconnect, reposition and extend the bed. Straight pull up, no damages.

The older gentleman seemed to scoff and take offense when I asked prior to arriving after looking at my call details if the vehicle was lowered or modified. I thought it was a fair question given the age and model.

"Well what difference would it make if it was or not?"

"Because I might not be able to load it on my rollback"

Fun thing to do would be hand him the keys and say have at it!!!

I've got a dry sense of humor, but I wouldn't have left him to figure it out even as he was mouthing off. He was struggling enough to lock the wheel to either side. Had to help push and pull on the tire itself.

Any other tow driver paid on a calls answered per hour system (AAA is hourly with OT) would've handed him the keys and driven off the way he was going on and on.

Yeah you have to have lots of hats when out in the public. First responder, traffic control, therapist.... In the end even with all the complaining he hopefullt is thankful you were on this call, if he is willing to admit that not sure.

Good looking out for the vehicle and keeping everyone in line.

You guys and your brothers everywhere do some amazing things. Professional rollback drivers have gotten me out of jams all across the West. For a time, my employer issued me a satellite phone when I was using a Chevy diesel pickup after the first time it got hauled home from the middle of Nothing. Then came the times a rollback driver got my 3500 dually to a shop from breakdown sites in really scenic areas. I don't complain, I offer to spot or help, I'll armstrong steer. And I tip out of my own pocket.

Just speaking for myself, There aren't enough jobs today where people can take pride and satisfaction in their work, even more so in the service industry, but for me this is one of them. More often than not a genuine "thank you" really goes a long way.
