Thanks, TDR Staff

How do I post my truck for sale?

Member it trouble.

What browser and version are you using and what other internet related software - internet security suites, etc? Does it happen on every single page or just specific ones? How about the front page of the site - https://www.turbodieselregister.com ? That's what Andy's complaining about and you, Andy, and his friend are the only people who have mentioned this up to this point. I'm trying to narrow it down.

Steve,

I am using Explorer 6. 0. 2800. 1106. Other internet related software I am using is Zone Alarm version 6. 1. 744. 001 and AVG version 7. 5. 447. Yes, it happens on every page. Occasionally I get a window that pops up asking to download Adobe Flashplayer (this happens once each time I visit TDR). When the Adobe Flasherplayer pop up occurs; it can take over ten minutes for the page to load up. I have so far selected NO when asked to download. The front page of the website loads as slow as molasses too. Let me know if you need anymore info. I am on dial up as I live way out in the country and no high speed internet is available except satellite. Can you add a provision for dial up users in the edit options that makes the page load faster? I offer this option on my website. If you want to take a look at what I am referring to, take a look at http://www.tractorforum.com/ Thanks.

Could you try downloading that flash player add on and see what happens? Some of the ads on the site are flash ads and maybe that's causing part of the problem. Nothing has changed on the front page of the site at all so if that's loading slow as well then it doesn't have anything to do with the software upgrade.

There is an option for faster loading for dial up users. Go to your control panel, edit options, and then scroll down near the bottom and change the forum skin to pda/dial-up . That strips almost all of the graphics out and will run VERY fast on dial-up, it works on mobile phones, etc (they should select it automatically).

Also, you don't mention anything to block spyware - AVG does not handle spyware so you could be infected with that. I suggest using http://www.spysweeper.com for that.

Are you clicking on process on the screen after the picture initially uploads? The picture isn't actually put into the database until after that screen. That's where you select additional categories you want it places in, the description and keywords (for searching for it). I just looked and many people are uploading pics today and they are going through and I tried it as well.

Thanks Steve!

I changed my options to dialup and the speed loading up is HUGELY improved. I think the problem is the continued request to download the Adobe Flashplayer. I don't want that stuff on my computer as it just slows things down and takes up space on my HD. I regularly run Spybot Search & Destroy as well as Adaware SE to get rid of spyware.

As said in post #104 above - I have a style sheet specifically for dial up users that I can virtually guarantee will make this the fastest website you access. I made that style sheet a couple years ago specifically for dial-up users and people on mobile phones, etc. It strips nearly all of the graphics and extraneous stuff out. Pull down your discussion forums menu to user control panel, click on edit options on the left and scroll down to the bottom, near the bottom you'll see Forum Skins - change that to dial-up/pda. You can also select that on any screen by scrolling to the very bottom of the screen and on the lower left you'll see a drop down menu that says "-- Default" - change that to pda/dial-up. If you change it there if you ever clear your cookies it will change back to default. If you change it in the control panel it will stay that way as long as you are logged in.

For example. I just loaded this page on my laptop connected to my cell phone (slightly faster than dial up - 102 kbps right now), on the default skin it took 22 seconds to load this page, on the dial-up skin it took 6 seconds.

Trouble

Steve, I just lodged on and when I had the Main Forum Directory high-lighted that flashing advertisement was flashing and covering the menu. I lodged on again and it had gone away. FWEW :)

Thanks for all you do for us. Tom

P. S. Spell check IS back and lord only knows I need all the help I can get. :-laf

This is how fast things move - I already had to install another upgrade to the software today for a security fix! Let me know if you run into any problems.

Ie7

For what it's worth, I've got IE 7. 0. 5730. 11 on my XP laptop (dual-core 2GHz Intel T2500). Reloading the home or main forum page, using the F5 key, takes about 3 seconds. I only have SpyBot running. IE is set to check for page updates every visit to a page. Opera 9. 01 takes about 2 seconds. Netscape 8. 01 and Firefox 2. 0. 0. 2 take about 1 and 2 seconds, respectively.

Konqueror 3. 5. 5 on 64-bit Linux (quad Opteron) and IceWeasel 2. 0. 0. 1 take about 2 seconds.

I got these speeds only because Comcast is working properly at the moment. Trying this test when their DNS servers are overloaded would be futile. I haven't really noticed anything displaying incorrectly on any of the browsers.

I can only guess that, for those having trouble with one browser or another, it's a browser setting of some kind, or it is some weird interference with security software. Make sure JavaScript (not the same as Java) is allowed on TDR web site. Try clearing your cache. Make sure your browser checks for page updates every time you visit a page (as opposed to only when the browser starts up or maybe even never); with the new software, pert near all the cached data will be invalid.

Steve, I have tried downloading the Adobe Flashplayer and it sped things up maybe a little but not much. I also tried switching from default to dial-up mode and yes it loads up faster but is still slow and stripes out all of the features I like from the TDR website. I don't have this problem with any other website except TDR. Can something be done to fix this? It is pretty bad when I click on a thread and it takes so long that I forget what it was I clicked on. I really like TDR but the website speed is really getting to be an issue and I just don't have the time to sit and wait for 5 to 10 minutes for a thread to load up. This problem causes things to be so slow that it can take hours to just view the most recent posts. Sure would appreciate it if this issue can be addressed so the board operates like before. Thanks!

There must be something on your PC causing that slowness or something between your ISP and the TDR server. Try bringing up a command prompt on your PC and type:

tracert www.turbodieselregister.com

You could also save it to a file that you could attach by typing:

tracert www.turbodieselregister.com > c:\tracert. txt

Then cut and paste the results of that in here. Maybe there's a problem on a router between you and us. The only complaints of slow speed we've gotten any time recently are you and Hammer. Whenever we have a speed issue we get TONS of email about it - it's been quite some time since that has happened. That's the only thing I can think of that could possibly cause a slow speed issue with the dial-up skin because it is VERY compact. Pages load in seconds on the dial-up skin on my cell phone even on a cell dial up connection which is only 14 kbps.

You might also try the free version of spysweeper - I have found a lot of spyware that spysweeper will find that adaware and spybot won't find.

Search ?????

Steve - when I search for some reason it always assumes I want to search for the past 3 months - how do I change so it doesn't default to this?????? I mean I select say last 7 days but the next time I go to search - there is the 3 month thing again... ...

This is a temporary thing. I had to change the default search to 3 months because of a poor built in search engine in this version - see Default search date limit changed

Both are related - your system either isn't saving cookies or you have corrupted cookies. See Having trouble staying logged in?
