Which 5th Wheel?

Hello all,

Just ordered a short bed and have to decide which "manual sliding" 5th wheel hitch to purchase. I have researched the Pullrite and am very impressed..... however, I really dont want to pay that much for one, plus the fact that you have to bolt on their (Pullrites) special plate onto your king pin, which would restrict other trucks from moving/towing your 5th wheel in a pinch unless you un-bolted the plate from your king pin, which is about 12 bolts.

Would like to hear from those who have manual sliding hitches other than Pullrite and your likes/dislikes. I am considering the Hijacker with sliding rails.

Thanks - Terry

Any regrets going with the 4. 10's? I struggled with this one for a long time and decided on the 3. 73 as I currently tow only about 2000 miles per year and am hoping the 3. 73 will get me better fuel economy when not towing.

I like the 4. 10s but I have the 235HP, 465 torque motor, if I was ordering a new truck with 90 more HP and 135 more ft/lbs of torque I would probably get the 3. 73s. I also rarely drive above 75MPH, I am a slow driver, I have tried varying the RPM for entire tanks of fuel and have noticed little change in fuel mileage.

I have the Reese 16K slider, but sense this is the ONLY 5th wheel hitch I have ever used, I have nothing to compare it with.

I ordered everything from etrailer.com

I happen to have a super pullrite 20. 5 and I you would be hard pressed to find a better engineered system. I did not require a slider but after seeing damaged trucks that should have had a auto-slider,I would give one a lot of thought. I am real pleased with how the pin gets locked into the hitch. I have also seen damaged truck beds where a receiver never locked properly and the trailor landed on the bed. That repair is costly. Good luck. Remember, you can pay now or pay later. Rob

A couple of thoughts... .

1 - I put a goose neck adapter on my 5th wheel... so that I can remove the ball from the bed and use the truck..... I also pull a large service trailer of 20K lbs... the 4:10's are the way to go for me. . however my son can pull my 5th wheel trailer with his 04. 5 3500 with no problems and the 3. 73 gears... .

2 - I own a business... and its been here 30 years... we've never had a liability claim. . a few vehicle problems is all. . yet my liability insurance has doubled 2 twice in 10 years... . I know factor in insurance cost into every thing we do... . its now a headache..... Pricing of insurance has inpacted what we do.....
