I pulled my first half way heavy load(about 7500) with my 99 5 speed the other day. In the lower RPMS in second gear you can feel a slight shudder. Goes away in the upper RPMs and is not apparent in any other gear. Anyone ever deal with this. Thanks in advance for any replies

Welcome to the club. No, no one will have a fix for it, but if you come up with something, let us know please. Is your's pretty stock or have you "played" with it yet? To expedite your repair sequence, here's what I have done. New T-pump, TPS, ECM, injectors, injection pump, looms and connectors, turbo, accessory drive, clutch, transmission. BTW, once it starts, you have about 10,000mls before it's almost un-drivable with a trailer on. Good luck... T

Its only in second gear though. I don't see how any of those components could be bad in just second gear. But then again it does not feel like a transmission problem but more like a weak cylinder. But then again a cylinder would be weak in all gears not just second. Thanks for the reply

Sorry 'bout that dude. I skipped right over the second gear part of your message. Hope it is in the transmission or driveline. It'll be a much easier fix. Good luck... T

Bad340, A number of issues here. Joe Donnelly said "not" to really apply the power under 1800/1900 rpms because the torque of the Cummins(and we all know it can handle its own torque) is too much for the transmission and clutch. Easing on and off the throttle is best in my opinion. Having said that , I inserted a piece of (I think it was) 3/16 flat bar in the top part of the carrier bearing to take out some of the (in my estimation) excess play my truck had. Seemed to get rid of some of the vibration in the drivetrain. My carrier bearing had more movement than some of the other pickups I felt and definitely more than the OTR trucks i used to own. Hope that helps some.

What rear axle ratio are you running? If I were a bettin man I would say 3:54!!!
Low RPM X heavy right foot x 3:54 = shutter
I have a friend with CTD 4x4 3:54 and larger than stock tires and he also complains about viberations.

Well if you were a bettin man you would have some money lol. I do have the 3. 54. I understand what your saying but why is it only in second gear??? I can nail it at 1400RPM in 3rd and get no vibration. I guess next time i am hooked up i will need to take it to the dealer and get there thought. I do have a good dealer so that will help.

I have read in an older TDR magazine that the carrier bearing in the long wheelbase models are the cause of this vibration. Due to the length of the driveline they had to put the carrier bearing in and it just isn't up to the task till the engine RPM's get above 1600-1800 RPM, atleast that is what I gathered from the article. My ETH/DEE QC 4x4 does the same thing as well as a few of my buddy's trucks.
