When my truck is cold, especially in the winter, when I am driving a steady speed I can feel the engine surge a little and then let up even though I am holding throttle steady it pretty much goes away after it is warmed up, I was just curious if this has happened to anybody else.

Mine surges to the point that the whole pickup will get to jumping no matter if warm or cold. It is worst at around 1500-1700 rpms. If I accellerate it goes away and if I let up it goes away but steady driving at those rpms no matter what gear it gets to surging really bad. Never did it until the II HRVP44 install.

Makes it hard to drive certain speeds as it feels like you have all 4 tires way out of balance or out of round is the best way I can describe it.

had same problem, on mine after having to change out apps ( due to dead pettel problem) , i installed a new apps from mopar & the surging started, could take smarty off truck, & would help but not fix problem, i then got wilson apps from timbo, installed it & adj same, no more surging, smarty back on max- all ok

Maybe just your grids cycling.

They cancel out after 15 mph so that is definately not it.

Billvo,

Mine did this about a year ago. Cleaned the K&N air filter and it went away.

My AFE air filter is clean so this is not the problem either

I am starting to lean towards this as mine has never been replaced yet. It is not as bad when ambient temps are warmer but below 40 it gets worse on mine.

I would agree and say that is probably the problem with my truck since I have 285,000 miles on the original one, do the automatic trucks and the manual ones use the same apps or are they different?

Not all that uncommon a problem - just doesn't usually surface until temps get low, and seems aggravated if pulling a load or grade.

Seems directly related to timing, and also aggravated by power mods that also affect engine timing (fuel). Might be somewhat contributed to by the ECM - at least what surging/bucking I had has seemed to be gone since installing a different ECM on my truck - but I need to be under a load and under 32 degrees to really tell...

Mine is worse running steady unloaded, once loaded down by a hill or an actual load it is smooth as can be. Just a bad lope/surge at 1500-1700 rpms only, no matter what gear, strictly rpm related.

Mine was bad enough when towing our 5er in cold temps, that I finally installed the IAT resistor "cure" some here on TDR have used to fool the engine control electronics into thinking it's warmer than it really is - seemed to help, but again, not enough cold weather driving to really know for sure.

I've driven the truck by itself in the mountains around here and in the flats under all normal speed and road conditions, at zero degree temps - and no observable problems - so hope mine is "cured"...
